  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

weight.. how long should it take?

Hi everyone, prior to Blossoms dental he lost around 500g. He has now put 200g back on making him 1.5kg - however, he should be 1.8kg. Providing I'm not rushing the weight gain and mainly letting him naturally increase (with a little help of rolled oats, sunflower hearts and alfalfa.. rotated) .. how long on average should it take him to gain the remaining 300g? He is still quite boney (his spine is bumpy and his pelvis isnt as rounded as it should be)..luckily the ribs are how they should feel though!

He gets an egg cup of pellets per day as I've been advised to not increase that, along with unlimited hay and veg/forage 3 or so times a week. (I do not feed veg and forage daily as it doesnt suit my buns and they leave excess cecals).

It may take a few weeks as he may have lost some muscle mass too and this takes longer than body fat to rebuild. Are you feeding him separately to make sure that he is actually getting his fare share of food ? He may eat more slowly than your other Rabbit (Dental Rabbits often do), so if not fed separately he may not actually get as much of the pellets as you think.

Hi, yes I have been feeding the 2 of them separately since after his dental in February - surprisingly, he finishes his share before Leo, and I have to stop him from stealing his too - every night without fail!

I wasn't aware about the muscle taking longer to rebuild so thanks for pointing that out. I read on here that it took someones bunny 6 months to get back to their original weight naturally so I suppose it varies from bunny to bunny. I definitely need to invest in some proper scales though!
