Just wondering!

For me, it absolutely has.

Over 3 years I've paid out £663.73 on monthly/yearly policy costs, as well as 3 x £50 excesses and 2 x £70 excesses to bring me to a total of £953.73.

In the same period, petplan have paid out £3197.31.

There's no way I could have afforded to pay out £4151.04 in 3 years.

It's been broken down into a few illnesses... Tapla has had stasis 3 times which cost (after excesses) £14.51, £142.64 and £442.75. Nena had stasis once at £142.64, plus a jaw abscess which cost £1265.73 the first time around and £1196.72 the second time around (and it's still an ongoing cost).

What about you?

So far nope, never made a claim but with 4 buns and a dog insured with petplan it costs quite a bit

I'd like to stop paying it and instead put the same money into a 'animal emergency fund' instead, that way the money is there if we need it but if not it isn't lost. The thing is it would take a while to build up to the point where it would be enough and Sod's law says that as soon as I cancel their policies they would all get sick and bankrupt me!

I would always have a dog insured regardless of emergency funds though.

No. I pay £6 per month for 4 buns and never claimed. It's worth it for the peace of mind though :thumb: heck, I know a lot of people that spend more than £24 a month on speciality coffee

My dad pays £7 each for Hettie and Sweep, and we had a payout on Sweep last year when his emergency vet bills for stasis and ec came to about £270. Still not over the policy cost for 3 years though!

it would have been worth it for bisc, matt and ches if i'd taken it out. but i didn't. i don't have it for maisie and i decided for any future pets that i would, so only eddie is insured so far. thankfully i haven't needed to use it.

Not insured my lot, two dogs, eight rabbits, two guinea pigs and a hamster. Keep an emergency fund 'just in case'. Glad I did as Mottle has already had tooth spurs.

Oh and the dogs have each cost a few hundred in ops.

Diagnosing Alice with her arthritis last year cost £1200.
Stasis and dental issues recently £300.
I also have a claim going through at the moment for £600.
So a massive YES for me

A massive yes from me too  I haven't written it all down, but Petplan paid about £2000 for Honey before she died last year. Digby has had about £700, and £50 every six weeks for metacam. Olly has had about £300 in total. Barney has had about £600 just in the last three months, and Molly about £200! I think Daisy is the only one I haven't claimed for. No way could I have paid that myself. Petplan are awesome.

Yes from me too!
When Tango went into stasis last year I wasn't in a position to spend the £600 it took to get him better, insurance effectively saved his life, as it meant I could do what the vet advised without having to do frantic sums before everything.

Oh - yes indeed it has been worth it...with 2 buns having had bad stasis and x-rays and another bun having a sore tummy - it's been great to have it. We weren't able to get Luna insured on time when she fell ill and it cost us just over £1,000 in total over 4 days of treatment for her bloat (there is a 10 day delay before a policy becomes active) - and it could happen again to any of our buns.

Plus - the stupidly big binkies they sometimes do is bound to end up with an injury at some point - so it will be very useful for that. Cheyenne launched herself into the air the other night and hurt one of her back legs on landing - thankfully not badly at all, and was absolutly fine after a cuddle but still!

No not for me, I pay for the two cats and some of the dogs but never made a claim. I did look at insurance for the bunnies but my vets are so reasonable I decided against it. Tbh I am debating cancelling the insurance on the dogs as well as I could bank all the money I am paying out and use it when needed.

I don't have insurance but if I did I would have paid about £1.5k to date and wouldn't have claimed once.

I only had Floppy 2 months and paid £20 in premiums when he passed away,,, I got back £70 from insurance...

I've subsequently insured my other 2 but so far havent used the insurance as my bills have been under the excess amount in any case.

I'm hoping I never really need to find out,,,

Hell, yes!

I decided to insure when I registered with a rabbit savvy vet as I know if there is "something not right" it will be investigated which costs.

Insurance is worth it just for the peace of mind. Having experienced one with kidney stones/bladder sludge and 2 others having liver torsions, one needing blockage surgery ... I know how the bills can reach £1K in the blink of an eye. Also add to that frequent stasis episodes for Elijah and Erin's tooth root abscess, the serious health problems Shadow had, Binky's collapsed vertebra.... Barnaby's 'something shows on x-ray but we don't know what it is .. trouble brewing' with his intestines. Yes, thank god they are insured!!

The point of being insured isn't 'to get money back' as that would mean your let being ill in the first place. You don't insure your car and think, 'damn, all that money I've paid out over the years and I've never had a car crash to claim my money back'!
Insurance is peace of mind knowing that if something goes wrong, money is not an issue that will hold you back from providing the best care possible and for me that is priceless. I'm a vet nurse and the number of people who feel 'forced' into having their pet put to sleep due to lack of funds is very saddening. Only last week I took on a bunny destined for heaven cos the owner would pay for an anaesthetic.
I have a dog, two cats and three rabbits insured and wouldn't have it any other way. I have claimed in the bunnies most over the years and not having to worry about cost is a great feeling - 'just do whatever he needs', I say! 'Referral? - oh no problem if that's the best option'.
For me, it's all about the peace of mind and being able to do my best for my pet.

So true. Last August Maverick had a facial abscess then 6 weeks later needed a referral to a specialist due to stasis which was not responding to treatment, those would have cost the best part of £2000. At Christmas Norris (dog), had major surgery to remove a suspicious growth on his spleen removed and intestinal surgery, that would have been another £3000 with all the tests, diagnostics on top of the surgery.

Thank goodness they were insured, they are both fully recovered and back to normal. We don't have that sort of cash lying around, so I hate to think what would of happened if we hadn't taken it out.

Absolutely this :thumb:
