  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I took my jed to the vets to have a teeth check because he hasnt been eating much and I was concerned. His teeth both front and back are fine and after a general health check. The vet decided to give him metacam and emeprid injections to ease any pain and get his gut going and sent me home with oxbow critical care fine grind. After a few hours he started eating hay again and pooed a lot. I took a look at the poo to see if its any different and found a few strung together and a few rod like and egg shaped. Hes having a good shedding session so im brushing him 2-3 times a day.
Im still concerned it may be bloat.

It sounds as though he has had some gi tract hypomotility ('sluggish guts') and ingesting a lot of fur during his moult has probably exacerbated things.

As he has now poo'd a lot I would encourage him to eat as much fibre as possible (hay), maximise his fluid intake. So offer a bowl of water rather than just a sipper bottle. Most Rabbits will drink more from a bowl. Offer veg left wet from rinsing. Also, encourage him to be active. Exercise promotes good gut motility. Keep a close eye on his poo output and if it reduces or becomes very small then he may need some more medication from the Vet. Keep up with the grooming too :)

Hope he is soon back to his usual self x

Thanks for the advise. He drinks from a bowl anyway. Jed is a house bunny. Its been a long night of checking on him hes had quiet a bit of hay and had some corriander which he loves. Ive also been giving him the critical care stuff which suprisingly was easier to give him than I thought. I think he actually likes it. Wish I had a video of him licking my fingers lol. Hes slept quiet a bit today. Pooing more normal today but still a few stringy ones and egg shaped but mainly normal. When im checking his litter tray he looks at me like ive gone mad inspecting his poo. Lol
