Jack's-Jane
Wise Old Thumper
Brian came to live with us in 2007. An RU member saw an ad' on Ebay offering a hutch for sale 'with extras'. Brian was the 'extra'. We were told that he was a 1 year old Doe called 'Ruby'. On arrival it was pretty obvious that he was definitely not a Doe.
Brian settled in well and he was neutered and then bonded with a little mini lop called Esme
Sadly we lost Esme after just a few months of her being with Brian. Eventually Brian met Bobbie and it was love at first sight.
About 18 months ago Brian started to exhibit symptoms of Adrenal Gland Disease. This caused him to behave like an entire Buck. He had hormone implants which worked at first, but the last implant had no effect at all. It became obvious that he could not remain with Bobbie as his endless 'pestering' 24/7 began to make Bobbie ill. She never once became aggressive to him though, but her chronic respiratory tract problems became so severe that her quality of life was badly effected.
So with a very heavy heart and after many talks with C I separated Bobbie and Brian. This was done on the understanding that if Brian's hormonal behaviour continued we would have to let him go. He could not live a life of permanent frustration and I could not afford the cost of a specialist referral for him to have surgery to attempt to remove the adrenal tumour. However, Brian calmed down almost immediately and adapted quickly to being in an enclosure near other Rabbits but with no direct contact. Bobbie's respiratory tract problems improved and she remains relatively stable at the moment.
Yesterday Brian developed acute neurological symptoms. The full details are too distressing to post here and they occurred again twice this afternoon. Brian also went totally blind. After examination Laura (Vet) concluded that he almost certainly had brain metastasis from the adrenal tumour. Some adrenal tumours are malignant and clearly this was the case for poor Brian. Tragically we had no option but to let him go. Devastated does not even begin to describe how I feel. Never have I witnessed such awful symptoms in a Rabbit. I sincerely hope I never do again.
Brian's passing was at least peaceful, Laura made sure of that.
Farewell for now Brian, I will miss you very much and I will always love you xx
