  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fleas/lice?

I noticed a few weeks ago that my bun sophie was scratching and sort of shaking her head a little. And when I looked I saw a few brownish specks in her hair that are just moving about.

So I took both buns to the vets and she said she couldn't see anything but she was searching really quickly and not looking very closely . ( I wasn't impressed).

She sent me home with two doses of Advantage for each bun anyway because I insisted they were there. I've used the first dose and due to give the next one this thursday .

They still have quite a few on them so wondered if it had actually worked at all??

I am also unsure of what they actually are and where they got them. They don't get in contact with any other animals. The only thing is they do go on the lawn and maybe next doors cats have been on the lawn (not at the same time).

I wondered if it had come from the hay ( I get it from The Hay experts).
Basically i wanted to ask if you think I was given the right stuff for them and should just carry on with the treatment but Ive heard of sprays that can work also.

I should note they are really difficult to see and not as bad as lots of pics I've seen.

Advantage does work but it won't be right away, it'll kill the fleas that were on them at the time but it won't kill the next ones until they hatch. I think it can take a couple of weeks.

I use advantage on my rabbits and switched to using it on my cats too, find it pretty good and nice and cheap online!

I'm no expert, but when I rescued Belle - she had mites (I'm guessing these are similar to fleas - hopefully someone more experienced will come along). The vet took a skin/fur sample to determine what they were. Your vet should have done that really I think?

I treated Belle (and Bailey as I was going to bond them when she was ready and thought I may be a carrier between buns even though they were in separate rooms) with Xeno 450 spot on and then again at 2 weeks and then again at 4 weeks. I also disinfected everything every day during this time as the mites can live on hay etc for a while without a living host.

Hope they clear up!
