Wildie Cross Advice

Captain Helen

Wise Old Thumper
I've been contacted by someone who has found what we think is a wildie cross and doesn't know what to do. The bun was found in their garden, there are no other rabbits to be seen and they're at least half a mile away from anywhere a wildie could be living. They asked around the neighbours and some think they've spotted a domestic bun loose in the area.

I don't have space anyway, but I have no experience of wildies or wildie crosses. The bun seems quite young and I think he needs to go somewhere with experience. Does anyone know what I should advise? Any rescues that specialise in wildies?

He's eating and drinking fine, and seems to be in good health. (I don't know the sex, it's just easier to say he!) The guy who found him has guinea pigs but no rabbit experience.

Here's a photo...

He looks a bit of an odd shape for a wildie or even wildie X. he looks to rounded and the ears are wrong. May just be a young agouti nethie?

Whichever it is then if he is eating and drinking fine then he can go to a rescue.

Thank you. He's quite a nervous bun, he buries himself a lot apparently. Sounded a bit like wildie behaviour from what I've heard, but I guess he's just scared at being all alone in a strange place.

In my experience nethies can be particularly nervous, especially when they are younger and haven't learnt to trust people yet. I always assumed the small size makes them feel especially vunerable.

Your little bun is certainly a similar shape to my nethie comet when he was younger.

Hope someone suitable can look after him.

Here is a young wildie

Note the very slim look and long ears and narrow face (the rabbit that is not my OH:lol:)

Here is a young nethie - rounder and shorter eared but twice as nervous!

Thanks guys, that's great news :D He does look a lot more like the baby Nethie. I didn't know they could be such scaredy buns as babies. I can recommend he gets the bun put on a few rescue waiting lists, and an adorable agouti Nethie has a much better chance of finding a good home than a wildie cross. :)

I wouldn't like to say for sure one way or anything from that pic. You really need to see the head shape which you can't from that. Although, wildies look really leggy when bouncing around, they can curl up into pompoms when the mood strikes and then their necks/legs can disappear. I would get someone who knows to look in person or at least some pics from different angles just to make sure.

The ears looked not at all long enough in comparison to the width of the body etc. and there was something not quite right about the fur -but as you see can only be 100% sure by seeing in real life!

Yep, I see what you mean. I wondered if he could be really young ie < 8 weeks and not grown his ears out yet. I think I remember Scamp being much rounder and nethie like as a baby, then he was suddenly all leg  His fur looks funny to me too - puffed up - I wonder if he's unwell as that's how they caught him so easily :?

Thanks guys. I've got a second photo, and now I can see his little rounded face I agree he looks like a baby Nethie :)

He said it took two people to catch him and it wasn't easy, so that's a good sign :) I wonder how he got separated from his family though. You'd think there would be other buns nearby as he's so young.

Oh yep, that's a very flat nose

Maybe oozed out of a gap in a pen? Might be someone looking for him, he's a bit young to have been dumped it's usually when they turn into teenagers and don't look like babies any more.

We once had a bunny who I suspected was part wildie. She was a real digger and needed so much space and was constantly trying to escape (eventually she succeeded) :(

Hopefully if bunny is nethie, it will be easier to find a home. Wildies must be a real challenge
