Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My bun is not as perky as before since she recover from an injury

Happy Hopping

Wise Old Thumper
On Mar. 16, I took my bun on a run in the backyard. The weather is about 6 deg. C and the reason I took her out for a run is because I thought she's over weight. Turns out she is not, she only gain from 2.4kg to 2.54 KG.

The run injured her leg, and she was limping. So I went to see a vet the next day, and no bone was broken and in about 7 to 10 days, she fully recovered from the soft tissue injury.

Since then, she's laying on the carpet a lot, not as perky as the other bun. She's almost 7 yr. old. So I just chat with someone who rescue rabbits, and she said it's arthritis. That because she hasn't be able to run around, something get stiffen, so to offset this, she say give her some metacam and help her to move around a bit. Supposedly she'll feel less pain as she moves around more, and that in turn help the arthritis and loosen her up.

Can I get a 2nd opinion in this matter?

I suggest going back to the vet.
Provided that rabbits have constant access to a large run attached to their hutch, they should get enough exercise. (Not quite sure how you take a rabbit for a run?)

She already went to a rabbit specialist vet for a full exam on Mar. 17. I think the speculation of arthritis could very well be true. As when she gets up from laying on the carpet, it took her a bit longer. And clearly it is not right always laying on the carpet, she used to move around to downstair and hop back upstair

My question is, using some metacam to bump back up her mobility, would she return to normal? As she only lost her mobility for 1 week.

As I understand it, you took your rabbit to the vet following the injury and has not been back since(?) and the information you have now been given is by a rabbit rescue rather than the vet? Apologies if I've misunderstood.

I'm afraid I don't think anyone here would like to speculate on what your rabbit's problem is, and I really would advise another vet visit.

I can only suggest taking her back to the vet. A vet should be the one to recommend medication and dosage. The only way to diagnose arthritis is by having xrays, but if the vet suspects it, a course of metacam should help her. The vet will then adjust the dose accordingly. Please don't give her metacam without advice from your vet.

I would never give a bun any prescription med without consulting a vet first. If it is arthritus it will need long term management which a vet can advise on.
