Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Newborn Babies HELP!!!

Hi,

We have an issue with the mother of some kits. We think she has killed three of them last night and there is one left alive. Obviously there is a chance that the three died naturally but we can't be sure. They are about 1 week old.

We are thinking about trying to raise the kit away from the mother but as I have not done this before any advice on feeding, bedding, cleaning etc would be greatly appricated.

Thanks

Reece

It sounds as though the Kits were not feeding. Is the remaining one looking as though he/she is feeding- round tummy and skin not all wrinkly ?

Hand rearing from one week of age is fraught with problems so it is something to attempt as a last resort.

Can you check that the Doe is producing milk ? Hopefully she is in which case you could try holding the kit to a nipple to try to get him/her to suckle. This is a task best carried out with two people, one holding the Doe, the other holding the kit.

Is the Doe well within herself ?

Do you have any other nursing Does with Kits of a similar age that you could foster the surviving kit onto ?

Hi Jane, to update the kit is 3-4 days old. I am providing this info from someone at the sanctuary.

It looks as if the kit has not fed or been cleaned as it still has blood all over it from the birth. I guess the outlook is not good.

The mother is healthy and feeding normally, just not interested in her litter.

Oh, and we don't have any other does that are nursing. Hopefully there are no more that are pregnant.
