View Full Version : Would anyone rehome a giant? Update 1 year on

Hi everyone,
Just a tentative post to see if there is any interest.
I was chatting to my hairdresser today and her mum has a female continental giant who she admits she doesn't have time to look after properly. The bun is about 18months old, and lives outside, I don't know if neutered or vaccinated. But essentially the bun gets very little, if any, free range time so spends most of her time alone in her hutch. In other respects she is cared for. I asked if she thought her mum would give her give her away if she found a good home and she thinks she would, but naturally would need to ask her.
I'm just trying to find out if there may be a possible home for her, and if so, I will persue this further.

I wouldn't have thought you'd have any trouble finding her a home, giants (especially young single giants) are snapped up quickly.

Thank you Sarah1989, and Mrs Bunnykins. I'll wait until after the weekend then maybe she's had time to mention it to her mum, then I'll text her. I'll update as soon as I hear from her.
Thanks again x

Update....
Well... I'm sorry mrs Bunnykins and Sarah1989... But I'm keeping her!!! :D
I'm so excited I could burst! Bunnies mum wasn't keen on letting her go to someone she didn't know, understandable I suppose, so I had a think and I'm going to try and bond her with one of my pairs, they are very laid back so I hope it will work. I've ordered my aviary run panels tonight, metal ones from dogrunpanels.co.uk, so nice and strong!
I'll post pictures when I get her, but it may be a few weeks while I get my aviary set up.
Thanks again for expressing an interest... Sorry I stole her

Update: she is here! :D She is a lovely big black English giant (so I'm told). She seems very relaxed and friendly, she has settled in tonight lovely, munching her hay, eating grass and dandelions, running through her tunnels and even did a few shaky head binkies! She has an attached run, which she didn't have before so has spent most of her time out in the run. I'm amazed how chilled out she is given she has moved house and had a car journey (which she hasn't done since she was a baby) I think she seems happy. I'll post some photos tomorrow.:D

I never knew how tricky it was to photograph a black bunny so sorry about the quality.... And it won't stop raining so I'm having to cover up my camera... Argggh.
She loves a tickle behind those enormous ears
I'm going to try and get her to the vets tomorrow, her nails are so long they are curling to the side, it must be uncomfortable for her. I was going to wait until I get her spayed which will hopefully be the week after next, but I can't leave her nails that long.
She has settled in really well, eating and pooping, haven't seen her drink yet, but she is eating with gusto!
I'm worried as her dewlap is so big I wonder if it is stopping her eating her caecotrophes. I'll get the vet to give her a check over tomorrow.

She is off to the vets for a mani pedi (you can see how long her nails are in these photos), a good check over, and vacs if vet thinks it ok. She has never ever been to the vets but she seems very chilled out, so I'm hoping it won't stress her, the house move and car journey didn't seem to phase her at all.

I'd make sure she is well quarantined from any other Rabbits you have. She has a bit of a gunky eye which might indicate a bacterial infection

Well done for offering her a home :D

Good luck taking her to Vets, ask about her dewlap as it is very big. Otherwise she is a beauty.

Karen's
29-05-2014, 05:36 PM
Well, she's had a mani pedi and I feel a lot happier about her feet now.
But the vet said she is quite overweight, and they recommend waiting until she looses around 20% of her body weight before I get her spayed, as it's too risky.
She's had her vacs and a general check over, and as much of a teeth check as the vet could do, her front teeth looked ok.
I asked about her eyes and the vet cleaned them up and said just to keep an eye on it for now but if it starts to look gunky again then to bring her back for them to determine the cause, if it's teeth related or something else.
As plan A (to have her spayed and try her in a trio with one of my pairs) is now on hold for maybe 6 months, I may have to think of a plan B. She is only in a small run at the moment, and as the more exercise the better, I may have to think about bonding my two pairs into a quad to free up half the summerhouse and one of the aviary (which was my original plan anyway before this little lady came on the scene).... Hmmm goes off to ponder...

She's pretty

Is it normal for a doe to have such a large amount of fluff under her chin? It's a male bunny household here & they don't have them?

Tell him to jog on, your bunny, you name her! My OH has no input to my bunnies names, he disliked a couple, but tough! What's wrong with ebony anyway? It's more elegant & fitting for her than sooty or sweep - they were both male too.

Took my wee girly to the vets again today as her eye is still a little weepy, vet said she has conjunctivitis and has given her some drops.
She weighed her too, a whopping 6.7kg! The vet would like her down to 5.7kg before she can be spayed. I think she has lost a little weight as her dewlap doesn't seem so buxom!

Oh my goodness, I can't believe it's been a year since i brought my lovely big girl home. I kept her original name Mavis in the end, it just seemed to suit her.
She is now very happily bonded in a trio and I must admit I think everyday how glad I am that she is not stuck in a hutch, all alone and not neutered. She now has two lovely friends, is neutered, lives in half the summerhouse with attached aviary. Her dewlap is gone and she is a perfect weight, and she has such I lovely temperament. Her life is so different and everyday this makes me happy. I think it makes her happy too. :D

I often think if I hadn't been cheeky enough to ask if her owner would give her up she would have spent the last year just sat alone in a hutch, it doesn't bear thinking about.
