  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Combined vaccine reaction

Pippin had an unconfirmed reaction to the combined vaccine when she was a baby. It caused an abscess which was surgically removed and had no problems after that. Up until now she had been vaccinated with the two single vaccines but since they have been discontinued myself and my vet came to the decision to try her with the combined one as the first reaction could have been a coincidence/unsterile needle etc.

She was vaccinated on Saturday and I noticed a very small lump (about the size of a spot on your face) on the vaccine site earlier this week. I took her in to get the fur around the lump clipped away and to see what the vet though. She took a FNA (looked at the cells of the lump under a microscope) and confirmed that it is an infection. She has advised that I clean the lump with Hibiscrub twice daily and monitor it for any changes.

What I'm wondering is - does anyone have any experience with this? Do you think the lump could just clear up with regular cleaning?

I'm worried :(

Infection or inflammatory response? Infection would suggest that either something was introduced during vaccination or potentially that the vaccine wasn't sterile. I would report it to the manufacturer if the vet thinks the vaccine had caused an infection.
