  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

There is no need to worm them unless you've seen signs of worms.

I don't worm mine as I read that if you need to treat for EC then it wont be as effective if you worm them throughout the year (please correct me if im wrong peeps)

The RWAF doesn't advocate regular worming (the 9 day course of Panacur) for bunnies; unlike for cats & dogs (and horses I expect ). The recommendation I think is only to treat for worms when you see them.

Panacur is also used as a treatment for EC but it's thought best not to use it as a preventative measure though and only if you're actually seeing symptoms (and, of course, you'd be best to seek a vet's advice in those circumstances before using the panacur). In those cases though, it'd be at least a 28 day course (the exotics vet I saw recently recommends 42 days even).

This leaflet is mainly to do with EC but there's a little info about routine worming on the last page:

I asked my vet about this (they're a fantastic rabbit vet!) and they don't recommend regular worming. They only worm rabbits if they have a high worm burden (faecal test to check) :)
