Spray painting a dog crate

Has anyone done this? Our old dog crate has been sat in the garage for a few years and mum says it has gotten a little scuffed and beaten up and I was just wondering if it's possible to spray paint a dog crate since it is much cheaper then getting a brand new one.

I know plastikote do an enamel paint which is meant to be non toxic and safe for children etc but anyone else have any advice?
I have never had problems with the buns chewing on bars or anything so hopefully that shouldn't be any problem but don't want any nasty fumes or dust coming off

Also, is it a good idea to use a primer or to sand the bars a little so that the paint sticks better?
