Max factor rabbit

New Kit
Hi all,

I am new to the forums and have a pair of NDs. Recently they bred - I am going to neuter/spay them shortly - and I have three lovely kits (which I will keep as well).

One of the kits appears to be a 'max factor', from what I have read. I would just like to confirm this with members here. Here are some pictures:

Its two eyes appear to be unopened (it is now 12 days old). The legs are bent inwards, and the head is slightly large. Its fur is also of a different consistency compared to its siblings.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I have no experience of this, but a quick search online reveals that these rabbits should not be allowed to breed again as they both carry the gene. I know you said you were going to get them neutered, but just be doubly careful to keep them well away from each other.

I recommend that you take the rabbit to the vet to confirm.

im sure there was a member on the forum that once had a litter of rabbits and one was like how you describe, forgotten who it was though, but they do rescuing now, that I know for sure. i'll have a search

Poor wee bunny, a visit to the vet to confirm and see about his eyes me thinks.
from what ive see and your pics it dies look like max factor xxx

I've never heard of this, but I'm interested now. Hope the baby is ok.

It's difficult to tell at that age how serious the problem is. You've got two options really, you can have it put to sleep now or wait and see how it develops with the knowledge it may pass away or need putting to sleep in a few weeks when it's clearer what quality of life it will have. If it does survive it's likely to have special needs and a short lifespan.

For the eyes, they need bathing open and treating with antibiotic ointment, so vet trip. Even normal kits can sometimes have an issue with opening them, they get a little infected and that glues them together. In the later case quick treatment they can be okay but it's very possible here there is an underlying issue effecting them - again it might be too early to tell or it might be obvious once they open.

I think you should send a message to Vee-Jay, she used to breed orange nethies and she had similar problems. Orange nethies aren't very common so it may be a genetic thing :(
