Possible EC in My rabbit

Daimond

New Kit
Hi All
I am a rabbit loving englishman now living in New Zealand.
Ive always had pets but until moving to NZ i'd never had rabbits.
7 years in and we adore our bunnies and the joy they bring to us all. They are as much a part of the family as us.
Me , my wife, and two girls aged 2 and 5 enjoy them running around the house and garden.

Last year we lost our wonderful Belgium Hare to a susoected acute reaction to an antibiotic.
It was the saddest day.
Bless poor Beauty and her wonderful nature.

Beauty was survived by her partner Dr Fleischman . (named after an old TV series character)
Dr was sad and lonly so we adopted a new bunny from the SPCA .
An adorable grey rabbit we called Maggie flower.
Her and Dr fell in love and have been devoted to each other.

A couple of months ago Dr developed a head tilt.
It was horrible
He went on baytril and Meta cam and was all sorted out in just a few days .
He did have a skin reaction to the baytril injection but devoted Maggie flower help clean him and made him better.

2 weeks ago we noticed (very suddenly) that maggie Flower had an odd hop. A weak left leg and as a result was kind of walking rather than hopping.
Very quickly (over night) it got worse so we rushed her to the vet.
Yhey said it was likely trauma and did an xray.
they found nothing untoward and suggested a scan to see if there was an issue with a shadow near her kidneys.
the scan found this lump but she said it seemed fatty and not cancer or anything to worry about.
Maggie was put on Metacam, Baytril and flagl S ( i think thats right?)
She seemed fine in herself. eating, running, walking, and sometimes hopping.
We were feeling good about it all but i had been doing LOTS of reading and was worried it was EC.
We kept her on this medication for two weeks and she had maintained this same state of running, walking , happy , eating well etc. We had to clean her bum occasionally . As its summer here the possibility of flystrike was high.
She had her two week check up due this thursday.
ON Wednesday after noon my wife came home at 4 pm and let the bunnies out of their large hutch/run into the garden as we always do.
Maggie was hopping around.
I came back at 7 pm and went straight out to say Hi to the bunnies.
Maggie was lying in and odd position.
Kind of like a half flop.
like a rear end flop.
Both legs off to the side
I called her and she spun around and headed towards me.
Dragging her legs

i was horrified!
and very upset

I gently checked her and she seemed happy.
I offered food and drink and she accepted.
We made her comfortable and checked on her throughout the night.
Good old Dr kept her warm and in the morning we took her to the vet.
The vet is a small animal specialist and very good with rabbits. A lovely lady and very proactive.
She examined Maggie and thought again it was trauma .
She did a pinch test and there was a point along her spine that showed little reaction. She still had reflex in her legs and feet.

she suggested another xray to see if there was damage.
We agreed
an xray was done and she thought she could see a fracture but has sent the xray to a radiologist in Auckland today to review.
We have talked with the vet about EC . i have been sure that what it is.

The vet has not been keen to treat for EC with Pancur as she didnt think thats what it was.
today i demanded the treatment and have started Maggie on 28 days of pancur along with her baytril, metacam and Flagl S .

Wh have moved her into the hospital hutch ( as we call it) inside and are bathing, cleaning and caring for her round the clock.
She is very bright and happy in herself. She is eating well and drinkink too.
She hasnt lost mush weight in the two weeks and we are hopeful that she will get better.

So my questions and advice required are
Have we left it too late?
Should the pancur still be effective ? If indeed it is EC?
have i done the right thing?

is there any advice you can give to help care for a poorly , but chipper , rabbit ?
basically any help, support and ideas would be really appreciated.
We dont know many rabbit friendly families here in NZ. mostly they are seen as pests so the compassion from some folks is pretty limited.

i mu st go now and medicate Maggie, change her and settle her down with the good Dr.
busy times and im very worried.

this afternoon after drying her off after a warm bum bath i lay down and put my nose by hers. I told her to fight. that i would care and pay for anything she needed. that i was here for her but she had to do the fighting.
she looked me square in the eyes. And licked my nose. She has never done this before.
i cried.

Poor bunny

The panacur is certainly worth a try, it wont hurt her in anyway and can be given alongside other meds.

You can do a blood titre but as far as I know that shows only that a rabbit has been exposed to the parasite, and doesn't necessarily tell whether there is an active infection, although a high or a rising titre would suggest that there may be an active infection.

:( I have no advice I'm afraid but I'm so sorry your rabbit has become so ill. I hope some more knowledgeable people will be able to give you some ideas, and that Maggie will be able to make a recovery.

I definitely think giving panacur is the right choice, as others have said it can't hurt. I would also treat Dr just in case as otherwise if it is EC they will continue to infect each other. You could also ask your vet to take bloods to determine if there is a chronic EC infection in one or both of them. As I understand it there is always a possiblity of full or partial recovery and it would depend whether the symptoms were caused by pressure in the brain from lesions which heal, or whether the lesions are too advanced to heal completely.

Sounds like she will be fighting, and you are doing the right thing. *sends vibes*

I'm sorry Maggie is poorly :( you sound like a lovely owner, you are doing everything you can to try and help her, there are some very knowledgable people on here so do stick around  that's so lovely she licked your nose, she knows you're helping her  yes I would definitely use the panacur, also metacam to reduce inflammation caused by the EC parasite if that's what it is. Make sure she is able to reach water (in a bowl) and has plenty of hay around her if she is struggling to get about. If she starts falling over or rolling you will have to keep her in a small cage/pen with rolled up towels round the edge so she can't hurt herself. Aww I really hope she starts getting better soon x

What a lovely post. Sorry you lost Beauty. Glad that Maggie Flower has a good husband and a loving human to take care of her. Sending healing vibes to you all.

I have no advice I'm afraid, having had no experience of ec. Just saying what a wonderful owner you sound and how lucky are your buns

Maggie get better asap

thank you all so much for your lovely messages. I read them all out over dinner to the family. Maggie was in her hospital hutch with us and im sure she was listening.
She been really bright today although there is no change in her legs at all.
There is strength in her legs as she can push off my hand. She is constantly on the kind of half flop position. (lower half flop)
We gave her a lovely bath in a newly purchased painter tray this morning. The painters tray works great as her front end is in the dry and her rear end is in the water. With somegrass on the top section she was very happy.
Maggie is trying to groom herself and she loved having her hair blow dried ! funny rabbit !
Second dose of Panacur given this morning.
I so hope that i wake up one morning and she her hopping. I dreamt last night that she was on a harness and we were going for a walk. We have never done that but maybe we will when she gets better ( positive thinking)
This evening we have had Maggie and Dr in the front room happily munching on goodies. Not sure the cat was too impressed.
We bathed her again and have put them both to bed in the hospital hutch inside. We have a tropical cyclone heading towards us tonight so dont want them outside.

Thank you for all your advice on Ec.
I just wish we had started her on the treatment straight away. Im kicking myself for not having done so.
Maggie is eating really well. drinking and munching on all the food we give her. That said she threw a carrot at me this morning. Guess it wasnt organic !LOL

I am going to call the vet and ask about putting Dr on the Ec medication too.
I suppose my only hesitation is due to the fact we lost our last bun Beauty as a result of her having an allergic reaction to a certain medication.

YOur kind works and messages of support are very gratefully received buy all of us.
We just need to adjust our lives to her needs.

Does anyone have any tips to help urine scalding? (if thats correct) Maggie doesnt have it ( as far as i can see) but im really cautious of her getting anything that may add to her ill health.

thanks again all.
you are a lovely bunch of folks
:D

Hi all
Can anyone give me any thoughts on timelines when treating for EC?
If you are going to see improvement would it be in a few days or a few weeks?
Has anyone had a rabbit recover from EC when it's been related to rear lag paralysis?
Thanks all
Just trying to understand

Dave

Comet has fought suspected ec twice, though he had head tilt as opposed to hind leg weakness. recovery can be very slow, and they can get worse before the get better. Comet took much longer the second time around, even my vet thought he wouldn't pull through. But the important thing to remember is that they can get better and I really believe positive thinking helps. Hugs for you all.

so an update on Maggie

She seems well in herself. We are bathing and lowdrying her twice a day. she is on Panacur, Flagl-s Baytrill and drops for an infection in her eye.
She has feeling in her legs and reflexes but no movement.

We had the results back from the radiology specialist and its not great news.

here is what they said

Please find below a brief summary of Maggie Flowers case,

Maggie Flower has had hindlimb paresis of approximately 5 weeks and paralysis of 1 weeks duration. We had performed xrays and bloods at Karori which were non diagnostic and she actually had a firm mass in her abdomen which I initially thought may be the cause of her paresis (walking rather than hopping due to abdominal pain). An ultrasound and FNA of this lesion revealed only fat so I can only presume it is a) normal for her, or b) scarring from a previous condition which has caused the fat to be firmer than usual.

Last week after her sudden onset of paralysis xrays revealed osteolytic lesions of T13 and L1 which I had assessed by a veterinary radiology specialist who concluded that the lesions are due to infection or neoplasia. After discussion David has decided not to pursue biopsy of the area.

Maggie is doing well with nursing care. Her owners use a sling to help her walk and offer her cecotrophs daily which she ingests. They supplement her feeding with oxbow and bathe her bum if it gets dirty. They say she is urinating and defecating well.

We have discussed prognosis. It is highly unlikely that her legs will regain function.

If it an infectious lesion she may stay the same
If neoplastic she will likely deteriorate over weeks to months and require euthanasia.

Our plan
- 2 months of antibiotics - baytril and flagyl, and metacam for anti-inflam/pain relief effects.
- Weekly weigh ins
- QOL checks every 2 weeks

After a long chat with teh vet they are very sure its not an injury or EC.
We are still treating for EC just in case. (and Dr is having treatment for that too)

The infection may clear up but if its cancer she will deteriorate over time.
Right now she is happy and doesnt seem in pain. She goes for walks with the use of a sling a LOVES IT !

Her partner Dr loves her dearly and cares for her all the time.
Maggie lay on her back on my lesg yesterdaya nd spent 30 mins washing her face!
we realised she couldnt do it on her own anymore.

We will keep up the treatment, the meds and the love.
The are both enjoying being in the house more often. The cat doesnt mind at all and we love the growing bond we are having with maggie despite her situation.

all we feel we can do is give love, attention and take it one day at a time
she has also taken to grooming me now. my face especially if i let her.. bless her

Thanks for all the kind words folks

I've only just seen this thread , I'm sorry the news isn't better  but it's clear that Maggie is getting the very best of care from you and her partner Dr, I really hope it isn't Cancer and that she can remain comfortable for a long time to come :thumb:
