How much do you spend on your rabbits - challenge

yaretzi

Wise Old Thumper
So in December/January I decided to start keeping track of how much I spend on my two bunnies, just out of interest to see how long things last between purchases. I like to think I'm good with money but it's easy to get carried away on spending when you want to spoil them! It's turned out to be really interesting at just how much things mount up.

I thought some other people might find it interesting to write theirs down on a thread too as it is surprising what it reveals sometimes. And also, it helps to see what others are spending if you want to try to cut down :D

I'll be updating my post as and when I buy new things, so there'll be a running total on my post.

My costs start from 1st December 2013. And mine also doesn't include fresh food as again, it's too hard to calculate for me.

So...

Insurance for them both @ £21.55 every 1st of the month (was £20 per month) : £335.50
1. 1st December
2. 1st January
3. 1st February
4. 1st March
5. 1st April
6. 1st May
7. 1st June
8. 1st July
9. 1st August
10. 1st September
11. 1st October
12. 1st November
13. 1st December
14. 1st January
15. 1st February
16. 1st March

3. 3rd March 2014
4. 28th May 2014
5. 2nd July 2014
6. 20th August 2014
7. 2nd November 2014
8. 17th December 2014
9. 24th January 2015
10. 28th February 2015

Readigrass 15kg sacks @ £16.98 each: £33.96
1. 3rd December
2. 2th September

Graze-on sacks @ £10.80 each: £10.80
1. 14th August (bought as a replacement for readigrass but N&T don't like it, so it'll replace megazorb for a bit)

Megazorb sacks @ £8.60 (was £8.20) each: £25.40
1. 31st March
2. 26th July
3. 17th December

Pellets:£21.97
1. £4 for 2 boxes of fibafirst on 25th February
2. £9.99 for 2kg of fibafirst on 4th September
3. £2.98 + £5 for some allen and page and excel to try them out!

Other bits: £310.22
1. £32.95 for Manuka honey in February
2. £5 on fancy camomile hay in February
3. £3 on chill and chew mat in February
4. £15.78 on two ice pods in March
5. £20.24 on paint/plastikote to do DIY in their shed
6. £33.98 on xeno 450 mite treatment (removed)
7. £5 on assorted flannels/cotton buds etc for Nena's abscess
8. £13 at ikea for samla boxes for storage, and little korken jars for pellets
9. £7 in wilkinsons for litter trays
10. £17.99 on a new hooded litter tray
11. £4.99 on a cardboard tube
12. £8.97 on 3 carabiner clips
13. £4.48 on 2 handles
14. £8.99 on a replacement vent for their shed
15. £2.49 on a stethoscope
16. £9.95 on 4 new handles to carry run, and another carabiner clip!
17. £8 on small cotton swabs
18. £8.15 on bits from ikea (korken jars, face cloths, storage for shed).
19. £8.48 on a new bowl for them
20. £4.59 for some special hay to tempt Nena to eat
21. £4.97 on recovery food from the vets
22. £53 on critical care, fenugreek crunchies, and some toys etc.
23. £6.57 on a bag of special hay and 2 salad treats which were on offer
24. £8.55 for special hay and more treats
25. £36.08 on plastikote
26. £8.48 for a new bowl
27. £10.42 on a snugglesafe
28. £7.97 on some treats
29. £6.18 on some more treats
30. £10 on a treat box from P@H

Vets fees/medication over the petplan limit: £254.84

Petrol for vets visits (44 x £6.10): £286.70

Other veterinary costs:: £363.76
1. £70 for Nena's abscess excess
2. £42 for Tapla's vaccination
3. £35.99 for consult for Tapla
4. £34.77 for consult and zantac for Tapla
5. £70 for Nena's abscess excess
6. £70 for Tapla's petplan excess for snuffles
7. £41 for Nena's vaccination

So my total from 1st December 2013 is £1731.12

I also bought a new run for them for £140 but I haven't included that.

It's very high due to the costs of Nena's abscess. If I remove all of Nena's abscess costs the total drops to just £697.42 which I think is a very good figure, although I haven't added any fresh food on at any point. So that's £719.34 on Nena's abscess (without factoring in their insurance costs). Bearing in mind Nena has maxxed out one years £2000 limit and is only about £100 from her second lot of £2000 for this insurance year.

Anyone fancy joining in :D? You can track whatever you want :D

This week I have spent
£14.99 on large willow ball
£1.99 on veg from M&S as I'd nearly run out of greens.
£3.99 on willow dumbells as they demolished the willow ball in 48 hours
£7.98 on hay from garden centre whilst waiting for Hay for pets delivery
£32 on two different types of hay (Timonthy & Rye and Meadow hay) from Hay for Pets which arrived yesterday
£13.09 on herbs from Galens Garden which they are not really eating.

I'm going to try to update this weekly so I can keep track of what I'm spending, I've only had them since 23rd February so am still trying to work out what they like, think I have finally finished with setting up my hutch as I'm happy with the tunnels, toys etc and that hutch has lining and as run cover. I might buy another litter tray so they have somewhere bigger to dig should they want too though and maybe another tunnel... :D

I spend 130 pounds ever 2 weeks on here hay bedding toys and veg fruit she as best I can give her my princes

I was tracking my spending in January so I know we spent £80 that month. That was on 1 x 9 kg Ings hay, 1 x readigrass (inc. delivery - was a trial as they'd never had it before), a hay bar from Manor Pet Housing and some sample puzzle mats for their new floor. We didn't have to buy pellets, Megazorb or toys that month, and didn't have any vet visits.

I'm not sure I really want to know how much I spend over the long term!

This month I've spent

Vets
£52.80 neuter

Hay & treats
£16 - 15kg bag hay
£6 - Dried herbs and flowers

Other
£6 - litter tray
£6 - "wipe your paws" mat

Total £86.80 and Mac's vaccinations next week

ETA: forgot something!

i decided to do this starting jan 1st and wish i hadn't now! we're already over £1000 thanks to vets bills, meds, taxi's and their usual 'supplies' :( hopefully it will even itself out as the year goes on as there has been so much so far.

eta: over £400 of this is vets/treatment/meds since the beginning of the year, plus over £200 in taxi's to get there and back aswell.

also, this is for bisc, and two piggies aswell. so all our pets. not sure what just bisc would be. i might work that out actually.

I dread to think. Fiver has cost me probably about £200 (possibly more) in vets bills in about 7 weeks. That includes medication, several vet trips, a dental and xray, a session of acupuncture and a consult with a different vet.

Then there's hay at £16 a time, which lasts me about 3 weeks, so I've spent £32 on them in that time.
I bought some joint supplements, pro fibre pellets and some fenugreek crunchies this month too. Cost me around £25 for those, including delivery etc.

So in about 2 months I have roughly spent £250 on them. I wouldn't mind keeping track of everything I spend on them, I only ever know roughly how much I spend on them, and that figure has actually shocked me, even though I have probably forgotten other bits an pieces I have bought for them. I only get paid about £400 a month, so no wonder I constantly have no money.

So far this year I have probably bought;
2 (or 3) hay for pets Ings 9.5kg so £32
One timothyhay.co.uk 10kg £22
A hay experts order of hay. £13
SS pellets, bought from different places. £20
Treat hays from local shops, probably about. £20
Toys £10

Other bunny costs
New litter trays. £10
Poppy's vaccination. £40
Insurance (3 buns for 3 months). £90

I think that is it :? So total = £257

Plus I've finally added Farore onto the insurance so as of next month that will be £40 per month, however I probably have about 2 months worth of food in stock right now and a week or so's worth of hay. I really need to get around to finding a local source for baled hay!!!

Hm. It's going to be a bit of a guess for the past few months but I'll try my best, and will be more accurate going foreword

1.5 bales of hay per month @£8 each = £32
1.5 bags of Megazorb per month @8 each = £32

Bulk load of willow balls/twists/rings ~£30, will last a while so say £15 for the 4 months

Rabbit Fibafirst large box £9
Timothy hay £8
Graze on pellets £7 (will last a while)

Insurance £26 per month for 4 rabbits = £104

I make that £52 per month for 4 rabbits, I think!

Forgot eBay baby rattles - £0.99 plus £4 postage!

I've been keeping a log of the basics and how long they last/prices etc for about 2 years.

For 11 rabbits

Insurance varies between £185 per year (Esme) and £70 with first year discount (Gracie) but in total about £1500 per year.

One bale of hay £4.20 last about 2 weeks
One bag Megazorb £7.00 lasts 2 weeks.
Excel (10kg) lasts c 3 months. £18.00

Vaccinations x £32 per bun per year (£352 per year)

Greens - I don't keep close tabs but about £5 a week.

I haven't counted treats at all as they are not the essentials.

so calendar monthly:
125.00 Insurance
29.33 Vaccinations
9.10 Hay
15.16 Megazorb
6.00 Excel
21.66 Greens

£206.25 a month approx ... without any extras such as insurance excesses... (When you say £18.75 per month for a rabbit it doesn't sound too bad it's just the x 11 that racks it up).

Just dont even ask :oops::oops::oops:

I have started keeping a track recently and it has shocked us - and thats since we gave up the insurance as it was costing hundreds a month.

Having seen how my Pet Plan insurance is going up for the over 5s I dread to think what it would cost for your 30+ rabbits, I suspect a lot will be over 5? Especially now the excesses have gone up a lot I'm sure I would have made the same decision.

I'm glad to see this sort of quite boring stuff interests other people! I thought I might be the only weirdo who cared what I spend

I've just had to add £20 onto my total as I completely forgot that I bought them new storage boxes at ikea and new litter trays in wilkos. I might also need to add £47.52 onto the total as petplan might not be covering the saline/F10 solution that the vets prescribed to clean Nena's wound with. I'm gonna dispute it though, don't really want that cost! I also do need to get a new tub of rabbit recovery which is about £39. I will use it all and it works out much cheaper to buy the 500g tub than the sachets, but £39 sucks a bit!

Parnsipbun I too dread to think what you spend !

Out of interest, how much has it gone up for your rabbits now they're over 5? N&T will be nearly 5 by the time their policy renews on 1st June and I'm slightly dreading the increase. Currently I pay £10 for them each a month, with a £70 excess on veterinary fees and a £50 excess on complementary therapy. I'm expecting an increase in the policy cost and an increase in the excess (whether that be a standard fee or whether they'll want me to pay the first 10% of any claim as well as the excess).

I have recent experience of this so thought I'd comment. The renewal before last, Barney was 4 and his excess went up to £80 (was £50), but so did Annabella's, and she was only 2, so I don't think it was to do with age. Their premiums also went from £17 for both to £25.50 for both, but that was mainly due to moving to a more expensive area. I cancelled Annabella's policy and just paid £13.71 a month for Barney.

This feb it was due for renewal again and Barney is now 5. The excess has gone up to £90 but the premiums have gone down to £12.96, probably due to the fact I moved again. The complementary treatment excess remains at £50, that has never changed. It wasn't as much as a jump as I thought it would be, only £10 difference.
