  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

buprenorphine (rupert again)

Rupert & Tia

Mama Doe
Rupert had another gas attack tonight, took him vets (was bad one) and she gave him zantac, metacam and burenorphine. He's out of it.... as in, he can't move, looks stoned.... is buprenorphine vetergesic? Should he have been given metoclop? He's eaten some pellets since coming home, and a bit of hay but now (we got home at 740) he's just sitting, looking stoned.

I'm sorry, I have no idea whether he should have it. I'm on the human version though and it's strong stuff, no wonder he's spaced.

My bunnies have had this too. It does make them really dopey.
Poor Rupert. Sending ((((((((((healing vibes)))))))))) for him. xxxx

Thank you. He seemed ok, but stoned.... he tried to lift his bag leg to scratch his ear n stopped as if to say wooooaaahhhhh maybe not.... bless him. I'm just getting ready to go see them this morning. I put a heat pad in for him last night with a bowl of pellet mash (his fave) I can see him at the shed window having a wash

Yes, it's vetergesic so will make him dopey. It would be usual to give metaclop for tum issues provided a blockage has been ruled out.

Thank you.. it's so confusing when they call them different names! I've given him some metoclop this morning and Metacam, the vet said if he was better this morning to give him some. He's better eating but not himself bless him

Vetergesic is a brand name, bit like Dairy Milk, burenorphine is the drug name so chocolate :D

Metacam is also a brand name for meloxicam (loxicom is another one) and Emeprid is a brand name for metaclopramide.

When drugs are first marketed you only get branded product because it's under patent. Once the patent expires anyone can manufacture it but they sell it as just the drug name (these unbranded drugs are called "generics")
