Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pain relief following a dental

hoppetylop

Mama Doe
A neighbours bunny had a dental today-afew tiny tooth spurs but she has sore gums and she was also found to have a small ulcer on her cornea so has cream and synthetic tears for her eye.She had a pain killing injection but no Metacam or Vetergesic was given to her to take home.Im sure my own vet would prescribe extra painkiller for tomorrow:?Im wondering whether to suggest she rings her vet surgery for further pain relief especially if the vet said the gums were sore and her eye must also be uncomfortable?

I would. Blossy is a regular dental bun and he needs metacam for a couple of days after his, sometimes more if his gum is sore. Luckily I can catch it before it gets too bad but if your neighbour wad told his gums were bad then I would definitely ring up. The last thing you want is for him to stop eating on top of him being stressed. Hope it goes ok. X x

Thanks BerryJane,I thought so but didn't want to "interfere"without checking on here first.:thumb:So tired of the "its only a rabbit it doesn't need pain relief"attitude that non rabbit savvy vets sometimes have.:(Will see if she will change her vet to a more rabbit savvy one.

I second this. I'm no expert but my bun had a dental recently and had sore gums and our vet gave 5 days of metacam for him for afterwards. And if your neighbours bun also has an eye problem too I would think he needs it even more so.

I agree too - dental pain can vary in the speed of recovery, but corneal ulcers on their own are supposed to be incredibly painful and my vet gives pain relief just for that, so I would definitely be asking for more if this bunny was in my care.

Thankyou both.I have told her to ring the vets to get pain relief for the next few days. She said she will register with my vet who is rabbit savvy.:thumb:
