  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Jackson is extremely poorly :(:(. He became unwell on Fri with what I thought was a bout of colic. I treated him and there was an improvement by Sat afternoon. However by Sat evening he started to decline again and I rushed him to the emergency vet at 11.00pm last night. Vet we saw thought that he has a blockage and an infection of the gut lining, which is what is causing the rectal bleeding. He gave him an injection of Baytril and some Hartman's fluid and some oral Baytril to continue at home. I had already given Metacam.

This morning there is no improvement, he is listless, unable to eat or drink and just lying still on his heatpad. I have given 70mls of liquidised nuggets so far ( vets didn't have any Recovery or Probiotics ) and some Fibreplex. His wifeybun is staying away from him ( never a good sign ). I am going to take him back tomorrow and maybe ask for some Metraclopramide. His gut is still working but sluggish. The vet we saw last night said Jackson's problem could be EC related as he came from a local rescue just over 6 months ago. The rescue does not worm or neuter and most of the rabbits are not vaccinated, although Jackson had recieved the combination vaccine. I have wormed him twice at the higher dose and for a month's course.

Is there anything else I can do for Jackson? I have made up some rehydration fluid which I am going to give as well as the liquidised food. Also will liquidise some herbs. Vet said not to give any more Metacam today as he was worried about ulcers and upsetting the gut flora eve more but I do feel that he needs something as he is grinding his teeth. Should I give him a few drops ? Any advice would be appreciated please. i am so worried about him.

I'm so sorry but I can't offer any useful advice. We have some members who have a great knowledge of all things medical and I really hope some will be along to offer help. Keeping everything crossed for your bunny.

He needs additional analgesia given by injection. He probably needs to be on IV fluids too. So you need to contact an emergency Vet now to have him admitted for intensive care. A full blood profile would be useful to assess major organ function.

When did he have the combination vaccine ?

The symptoms you describe can fit with coccidiosis and Baytril would not treat that. So another reason to have him admitted as an emergency

I hope he can recover xx
