  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Tummy ache?

Dieselsmum

Warren Scout
I came home yesterday and diesel didn't come running to the side of his cage to meet me like he usually does. Even when I opened the cage he stayed put. Alarm bells starting ringing immediately so I watched him very closely for 30 minutes.

I had a feeling he had a tummy ache, he refused food and kept running to his tray but not actually pooping!

I gave him some gut stimulant which I had left over from his last vet visit and within 30 minutes he had eaten, pooped and was running around.

He ate everything I left with him overnight and this morning was getting into mischief.

I came home from work tonight and he has eaten, pooped and came straight out of his cage to run around. I've tried to check his tummy but he's a bit of a sod to get hold off but from what I can feel it feels soft! He seems a bit moody but then I am prone to overreacting so maybe I'm reading to much into it.

Does this sound like a tummy ache? Should I be concerned?

He may have had some abdominal pain.

Just a wee word of warning re administering gut stimulants. It is essential that you are certain that the Rabbit does not have a full obstruction. If he/she were to have then giving gut stimulants could make things much much worse. An abdominal examination is always needed before giving gut stimulants. They should not be given just because the Rabbit has refused food.

I am glad he seems to be OK now :)

Thank you for your advice. Can you tell me the signs I should be looking for regarding an obstruction? If he is pooing and eating slightly can a full obstructions still be present? I'm so paranoid about his health since his accident.

It is more what can be felt (on abdominal examination) and heard (by listening for gut sounds using a stethoscope) than what can be observed just from looking at the Rabbit. Whilst it would be unlikely for an obstructed Rabbit to be eating or pooing it is still not a good idea to administer gut motility medication without an abdominal examination.
