  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Potential Rabbit Ear Problems

Lately my new 6 week old Lionhead has been acting strangely. He puts left ear down and into his paws and starts to rub it. He also tries to bit and nibble it. I'm not sure how much a vet would cost and I honestly don't know what to do. I don't think its ear mites. Please, help me.

Firstly, are you in the UK?

6 weeks is too young to be away from his mum.

If you suspect he has anything wrong with his ears, please get him to a vet as soon as possible. Rabbit ear problems can get very nasty, very quickly.

However, what you are describing almost sounds like a rabbit washing his/her ears?

Does it look like this?

I am actually in the US and I know that they are supposed to be weaned at 8 weeks... It was given to a woman who had later given him to us and I'm not quite sure why he was given to me so young. I am actually very unhappy with the placement of the poor thing.

Yes, that is exactly what he was doing. None of my other rabbits have ever done this in my sight. Is it normal?

Yup, it's ear cleaning, surprised you've never seen it, most rabbits do it several times an hour!
