Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Glaucoma. Had eye removed. U/D Other eye cloudy now?

Hi everyone, first apologies for not being around for ages but I started a new job at christmas so been really busy.

I noticed this morning that my Rocky has a cloudy eye that was bulging out slightly as far as know he is fine in himself other than that...eating and pooping fine.

Anyway straight to the vets who put a dye in his eye and couldn't see any staining but thought it stained a little as the bottom of the eye but admitted she has never seen this in a rabbit so wasn't sure. She also checked his teeth and said they seemed fine. She went off for ages to do some research and has sent me away with some metacam, antibiotic eye gel (clinagel - active ingredient gentamicin sulphate) and she wrote a prescription for me to pick up from the chemist Timolol to try and reduce the pressure in the eye (if there is any). Anyway I'm to go back on tuesday so they can see how he is going but know a few of you guys have had eye problems in rabbits and wondered if you could advise me at all. I can upload some pictures if that will help.

I am wondering if it is a traumatic injury. The fact that the cornea took up some of the fluorescein would indicate an abrasion/ulcer. So maybe a hay stalk injury ??

The vet did say that but then the eye did visibly look like it was bulging and the dye did stain a little at the bottom but she wondered if this was dead white blood cells that were staining she said she couldn't see an ulcer or any damage to the eye. It's a shame she didn't have anything to test the pressure in the eye like when you go to the optician. I suppose if he is on antibiotic cream and the glaucoma drops fingers crossed that will cover both scenarios. Just hoping it clears up and he doesn't need his eye removing or anything :?

Unfortunately Rocky's eye has not improved at all so the vet has decided the best thing would be to have it removed. I'm not convinced he isn't deaf either or has limited hearing as he doesn't run over like the others do when I click. Is there anyone else who has had a bunnies eye removed? Did they recover/cope ok? I'm worried about the actual operation/after etc.

I had a Rabbit who had to have his eye removed due to Glaucoma. He recovered very quickly and was much happier without the painful eye. He was blind in that eye anyway, so retaining it served no purpose and just caused him pain. He was an older Rabbit too.

Thanks Jane I know it's for the best I just get extremely worried when they are having an operation in case they don't come round for one reason or another. I especially worry about Rocky as I am sure he is disabled there's just something about him unlike all the other rabbits I have had. Anyway I'm sure it will all go fine and he will be much happier without his nuisance eye!

Rocky had his eye removed yesterday and all went well. He is eating/pooping well and apart from looking very scary he is much happier :)

Dont know how I managed to miss this before. Hope Rocky is continuing to be happy since his op. He looks a real beauty (like my lovely Daisy).

My first bun Miffy had an eye removed as there was an abscess/tumour behind it. He recovered quickly and coped fine with one eye.

Glad Rocky is doing well after his op. Sending lots of vibes xx

Oh bless him, I hope he makes a quick recovery. My sister has glaucoma and was virtually blind in one eye, it was so painful she had hers removed years ago. Her false eye looks better then her original, as it was swollen from the glaucoma. So I expect he will be feeling much more comfortable now :thumb:

Thanks for you well wishes guys. Rocky did really well recovered from op and has been fine but now his other eye is going cloudy :(

The vet said there was nothing particularly wrong with the eye they removed as in no ulcers or puss so she thinks it's more of a congenital defect that's making the pressure rise from the vitreous fluid not draining properly.

He has drops at the moment to try and bring the pressure down but I need to get him to an ophthalmic vet as it's beyond my vets capabilities. Does anyone know if a good ophthalmic vet in the Manchester/derbyshire area?

Also has anyone else experienced this?

I know when we had a problem with Homer's eye going cloudy the first vet (not as experienced as the one we moved to) wanted to refer him to a place in Frodsham which is an eye specialist place or give Chester Gates a call to see if they can recommend anyone. I can't remember the name of it now but maybe you could do a search.

ETA - this may be the one.

ETA - this is a link to my original post about Homer and someone has posted some info/links which you may find useful. Chester Gates definitely has MRI if you need to go down that route.

FYI - Homer's eye got no worse until he passed away in the May from thymoma so not to do with the eye although his eye remained cloudy (but not totally cloudy)
