Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Metacam dosage

Kerbie had his eyes flushed today but the right one didn't flush, it became swollen and looked horrible :( but it's much better now. We rang up when we got home and asked if we could give him more metacam tomorrow if he looks uncomfortable but I'm not sure on what dosage he would need.

He weighs 1.5kg.

I'm not sure which metacam it is, I think its the dog one. Is it a different dosage required for the cat/dog metacam?

I'd really appreciate any help :D

You need to establish which Metacam you have as the strength of the Dog one is three times that of the Cat one.

I didn't realise it was that much of a difference  Yikes! I'm just about to go and pick it up from mine so I'll post back when I know for sure :)

Mine are on the dog one after their spay on Monday, my smaller one is 1.8kg and she is having 7 drops once a day if that helps and just to compare my bigger one is 2.6 kg and is on 10 drops once a day.

Thanks all :)

My bf rang the vets again just before they closed and the receptionist said it would be 'about 0.4ml' for him. That sounds about right then?

According to this book: BSAVA Manual of Rabbit Medicine and Surgery (2nd edition) the dose of Meloxicam (brand name Metacam) is 0.2-0.6 mg/kg per 24 hours.

The dog version of Metacam contains 1.5 mg/ml and the cat version is 0.5 mg/ml

Hope this helps.
