Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Misfit is ill can't believe this

After all the stresses I've been having with marbles recently, I've woken up this morning and misfit won't eat  she looks hunched up like she's in pain but I can't tell what from. I literally can't believe this. I've only just been coping with looking after marbles alongside work and everything else, I don't know how I'm going to manage with both of them. She's booked into the vet this afternoon.

They don't live together so I don't think she could have caught anything from marbles though I'm not sure? She doesn't have any of the head tilt symptoms or anything, she just won't eat and is looking very sorry for herself. Oh god

Oh no :(
Is she pooing? Is she drinking?
Try some tummy rubs if she will let you, it may ease any tummy discomfort.
Hope she's feeling better soon xx

How stressful for you

Could you ask the Vet to admit her this morning if you have to be at work. It sounds as though she needs pain relief rather sooner than this afternoon. If she has not poo'd much overnight then I would definitely want her examined this morning.

Sending lots of vibes xx

She has done loads of golden poos overnight so I don't understand, this must have just come on suddenly.

I literally can't take her to the vets until this afternoon, I see patients for my work and have appointments all morning. I am so worried about her. Oh god poor misfit she never makes a fuss bless her. I feel like such an awful mummy I'm at work and there's nothing I can do.

Can you get someone else to take her to the vet?

If it has come on very suddenly she may become hypothermic and go downhill very very rapidly -

It happened with one of my buns recently after the straw episode - stomach became blocked overnight- literally just over stuffed - not technically obstructed as such - drove her to vets for midday appt - by tim,e we got there she was freezing cold and starting to show neurological and other symptoms of failure.

She survived - and was ready to take home the next morning but instant heat and fluid and pain relief were essential.

PS an actual obstruction can kill within 12 hours.

Poor Misfit

I too really advise you to somehow get her to the vets in the next hour or so, leaving her till the afternoon really isnt a good idea.

I understand why everyone is still saying that Misfit needs to be at the Vets now, but Katie has already said that she is at work and it is 100% impossible to get Misfit to a Vet before this afternoon. I think we need to try to support Katie as much as possible as it is obvious how very distressed she is and that there are circumstances totally beyond her control that are preventing her from being able to down tools and leave work.

I really hope that Misfit will be OK Katie, I am sure that I would be beside myself with anxiety in your situation. If only we lived in an ideal world where all that we know needs to happen does happen.

Sending millions of vibes for Misfit xx

Hi Katie,
What a worrying time for you.. big hugs x
Sending loads of vibes for misfit, try not to panic, you are doing the best you can and you have noticed early.
Let us know how you get on at the vets x

Thank you so much for this Jane. I totally understand everyone who is saying I needed to get her there this morning but it was literally impossible. Thanks everyone for the advice but I promise if there was any way I could have taken her I would have done. I have already taken 5 hours off this week for marbles (mon morn to take her to my usual vet and yesterday to take her to the specialist which was almost a 3 hr round trip). I am now taking this afternoon off too for misfit but my job involves appointments with patients so it is a case of doing what I can to work around that.

Anyway, I have just got home and misfit looks much better thank goodness. She has eaten a small amount of veg and some nibbles of hay. She passed some horrible mucousy looking poos and she looked like she was in pain as she was passing them :( I can't think of anything that would have caused her a painful tummy, no new foods although she did have a good chew on a willow stick yesterday but I don't think that would have caused it? She is going through a heavy moult at the moment though and did have a stasis episode once before during a moult. I also have to admit that while marbles has been so poorly I haven't found the time to give misfit a good brush for a while so I need to make more time for that I think.

We're off to the vets now anyway. Thank you everyone. X

Jack's-Jane, You always have such a balanced view and manage to see the bigger picture :) Over the years I have been on these forums, I have admired not only your expertise but also the fact you are able to articulate without inflaming a situation and see an angle which is not always obvious. I would always have you on my team. Just saying!

It is a sad fact, as you have pointed out, that sometimes our hands are totally tied and we just have to do the very best we can do with the situation as it presents itself. Sometimes in itself, timing can be our worst enemy in these situations.

Good luck Katie.

Well as suspected, misfit is being treated for stasis. She hasn't been hospitalised because she had a few nibbles this afternoon. Looks like I now have two stubborn rabbits that I need to persuade to eat

She's had metacam zantac and something else I can't remember...and I have zantac to give her twice a day at home. I think I probably need to pay more attention to frequent brushing while she's in a moult.

Also while she was there he weighed her as she hasn't been to the vet for a while. 3.1kg  for a dwarf lop cross dutch. She's always been on the stocky side but that seems a lot?! I did increase their pellets to two eggcups a day during the winter but they only have that, a small handful of veg or forage and then hay.

Poor misfit :( hope she feels better soon.

Maybe she is jealous that marbles got extra treats ;)

Hopefully things will start moving through better now. I'd encourage her to have a good water intake, so leave her veg wet from rinsing them and if she has a water bottle try offering her a water bowl too. Rabbits tend to drink a lot more from a bowl than from a bottle. Getting her to have a hop about should help her gut motility xx

My heart dropped when I saw this and I'm so glad to have read and see that she's on the mend  It must be so stressful *hugs*
