Am I being over obsessive?

Kirotea

Mama Doe
I've had Millie and Maddie for just over a month. They turn 6 months old next week, according to the vet information I got from the RSPCA when I rehomed them, although their date of birth was probably estimated / guessed as they weren't born there. They're my first house bunnies having only had an outdoor bunny as a child previously.

They were both spayed, vacinated and checked in December while with their RSPCA foster mum. I was thinking about taking them to the vet for a check up soon, but my mum says I'm being overly obsessive! I just thought he could check their teeth, nails and check them over generally. Although they seem perfectly happy, love their hay and produce nice poos

I'm just not confident that I would know how to check their teeth or what I'm looking for and he could show me that and how to cut their nails. Although I've read up about it all, I'd feel better having someone show me! They travelled fine when I bought them home, just sat and ate hay in their carrier (and that was a 40 minute journey this would only be 10 minutes), so I don't think it would stress them out. They don't like to be picked up very much and kick a lot. Once they're up they aren't too bad and will stay for a few minutes before getting restless, it doesn't stress them out though and they will come and see you afterwards.

I'm really not sure! Is it worth taking a perfectly happy bunny to the vet for check up? It's probably more for my peace of mind than for their benefit though :?

Unless they are ill mine just go once a year when they are due their vaccination, I don't really see the point just for an extra check up. In regards to the teeth, the vet can't really show you how to check them, they use a special piece of equipment. The only reason I could see for going from what you have said is if their claws are too long and you don't want to do them yourself. I just do mine rather than go to the vets, I hate doing I and the buns hate it too but it saves money and although mine aren't too bad at travelling either, I can't think they exactly enjoy it.

I would probably leave them be for now. It's only been a month, and they will still be settling in. I would maybe think about getting them checked in about 6 months, providing there are no health problems before. Then I would have their teeth checked and whatnot.

My buns are constantly at the vets, but that is because two of them have dental problems and the other has an on going eye problem. I only go every few months to have their teeth checked, but if your buns have never had a dental, or shown signs of dental problems, I would probably leave them for now. They would have been checked at the rescue, anyway. :thumb:

If they need their nails clipping, then I would pop them to the vets for that.

Ok thanks. I was under the impression that I should be checking their teeth and I couldn't figure out how I was going to do that! They didn't have any teeth problems while with the RSPCA and they are very good hay eaters, so I'm hoping that will keep them worn down at least.

How do you know when they need their nails clipping? I can just about see some of the ends of them now through their fur. The pet shop in town also does rabbit nail clipping and said they could show me how to do it but I'm not sure whether to trust them or not :? I'm a bit scared about doing it and might chicken out and get my mum to help! Really bad probably at 25 years old to still be asking mum to do stuff for me(!) but she's much better at things like this. I'm way too over cautious!

Nail clipping is definitely not easy, so don't feel bad for asking your Mam for help! It's definitely a two person job. I would think they'd have had their nail clipped at the rescue, so they should be ok for a while. Tbh, I only do Fiver and Xena's nails every now and then, when I notice long nails. I haven't had to do Shadowfax's yet, and I've had her since August!

Do they have black nails or see-through ones? See-through ones are easy to do. You will notice they get long, have a look and see where the quick is, if there is quite a length of nail from the quick, they could probably do with a trim. If they have black nails...get your vet to do them.

They're multi coloured! There's some light and some darker. I guess they've just got multi coloured everything being harlequin!

Kirotea, I am quite often near where you are, and would happily clip your bunnies' claws for you......in return for a small donation to Windwhistle Warren rabbit and guinea pig rescue.

Just let me know if I can help.:thumb:

My Mum comes round to help with 'manicures and pedicures' and I'm 29 . It's a two person job really, for me anyway, one to hold one to clip.

Hi Kirotea, just in case you don't already know , De Montford Veterinary Surgery on Merstow Green have there own bunny specialist, Andy Barwise - he is absolutely fab, my boy Frodo doesn't see anyone else :)

Aw thank you that's really nice. I might be worried you'd rabbitnap them though with your love of harlequins!:lol:

Hi thanks I did find out about him when I Googled rabbit vets nearby and I found a thread on here recommending him. It's how I ended up joining RU :) It's great to know there's a recommended vet just 5 minutes away from me.
