vet charge for insurance claim

Anyone else been charged for their vet or emergency vet to do an insurance claim?

I was charged £12 by the emergency vet when Honey had to go there. Think it is a bit much to charge people to put in their insurance claim.

Yes think I was charged about £7 for them to process the claim. Suppose it's because it takes them some time and resources to gather the medical records and post them off

 no I've never been charged!! It wouldn't enter my head that I might be! I have claimed at 4 different practices and none have charged me :? Maybe it's an area thing :?

Yes. My vets started charging a couple of years ago. It was about £5 and went up to £6... I've just seen from their website it's now £8 (hoping it doesn't rise anymore!).

I can see the point as they spend quite a bit of time on the paperwork and to spread the cost evenly means the non-insured are paying for time taking up with something they don't generate. The fee is less for continuation paperwork, about 50% I think. My vets are a referral practice so I'm guessing get a considerable amount of paperwork to fill in that perhaps a non-specialist vet wouldn't be quite so bogged down with.

£12 is a lot, £6 felt 'okay' to me and £8 has left me a bit

We too pay £7 a time (for our cat insurance claims) my cat keeps getting beat up and costing us money in excess and her lots of pain! My husband is on a mission to find the guilty bully cat!

That seems so unfair when a lot of people insure their animals because they couldn't afford an unexpected bill :( Especially when a fair few vets hike costs up anyway.

Mine aren't insured so no idea if my vets do it, but I doubt they do.

Neither my regular vet or emergency vet has charged so far. I did wonder if they would the first time I claimed though - it seems reasonably to me that they would need to cover their admin costs.

It's becoming more standard practice it takes a huge amount of time and as insurance is becoming more standard practice (which is great) it will only get worse so many practices charge as it effectively takes up a member of staff which means you are losing revenue from appointments etc
We don't charge at my practice still but I can see more practices joining in

The ophthalmic referral vet had a charge of £18 per form. I batched those appointments up and sent them on one claim  my acupuncture vet doesn't charge, she thinks it's a ridiculous idea to charge as yes it does take time, but without insurance claims they wouldn't get as much 'business' because people wouldn't be able to afford the treatment, so they just view it as an essential part of running the practice.
