Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mucky Bum

Levi keeps getting a bit of a mucky bum sporadically. I was wondering, if people wash night bums using water, do you put special shampoo in the water or do you literally just use warm water? Obviously I know not to get him completely wet, I'd just be doing a bit of a 'spot clean' but using water to soften the bits that have got stuck on. :)

Science selective. They only get an eggcup each a day. I'm not sure what causes it, he eats exactly the same as Daisy and she is fine. Plus they don't get given that many veggies because of this problem I only give them a little amount every day. And most of the time he's fine. But them occasionally the mucky bum makes a return.

Its frustrating, I know.
I have a bun who used to get a mucky bun but once I changed to SS it stopped.
I cant give her too much plantain or any treats as that trickers it again.
Also she is only able to eat a small potion of spring greens or cauliflower leaves- anything else sets it off again.
My other bun can eat ANYTING!
I would try cutting out all veg and see if that helps.

Yeah I've cut their diet right back to basics again. They do get dried forage as well, maybe that is partly to blame.

Its tricky i know and frustrating.
I went down to just a few pellets and hay and started introducing things again very slowly to figure out what was the trigger food.
It might be the dried forage - i know it sounds crazy but some buns tums are just sensitive to certain things. For my bun it was dried plantain.
To answer your original question re mucky bum- just use warm water and make sure he is dried properly with a towel before going back outside.
Good luck

I find that too much protein, and/or carbs give my buns mucky bums. Or they generously leave their soft poos around for me to stand in

If I have to, I use just warm water to swish to poo off them. Sometimes I cut pellets out completely, and feed veggies, hay and dried grass. They seem to like it anyway, so can't be too badly off :)
