  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Abdominal Abscess - comments pls

Cross posted as couldn't find Health before!

Hi, not posted for some time but wonder if anyone can comment please -

Buster, ex stray Dutch bunny who has been with us almost 12 months was not eating yesterday and ended up at vets - they felt a swelling in his abdomen, close to bladder (thought it was full bladder initially - same thing in December when in for sore mouth/spurs) this time vet drew off some fluid that was cloudy/milky and foul smelling. X-ray shows this is not the bladder but some sort of 'abscess'. He is eating a little by himself and receiving syringe feeds, bright and perky.

I am taking to Guy Carter later for second opinion. Original vet does not feel antibiotics will touch it and would try to remove but obv warns very risky. Guy, on the phone, says could open up and see or if eating still try antibiotics - but wants to see him first of course.

So, any ideas pls.

How the problem is managed is likely to depend on the exact location of the mass. More diagnostics (Bloods/ultrasound of abdomen) may be useful before proceeding with a laparoscopy.
