Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Symmetrical Hair Loss on Face/Neck

Hi

Molly is a 6 year old Mini rex rabbit who has always have thin fur on her neck, and no whiskers, and she has sore hocks. She however has now developed bald patches on her face and she is virtually bald on her neck. She has a bald patch where her whiskers would be and a thin fur patch under her eyes on both sides of her face. She's seen a vet experienced with rabbits and she's sure its not a parasite problem as Molly has no dandruff or any red skin. Her skin is healthy, just her fur has gone. She's not started her summer moult. She has got a partner, who does groom her but i haven't noticed it being excessive or why the fur would be symmetrical.

What could it be? Could she genetically have thin fur and as she gets older, she'll get thinner fur and hair loss? It may explain why she has sore hocks if she has genetically thin fur.

Maybe it's ringworm...

Could she be pulling it out herself? This can sometimes be related to pain.

The hair loss is in areas where she can't reach herself to pull fur out. The vet did suggest it could be related to her teeth, but she did look in her mouth and didn't see any spurs, and she has no lumps on her jaw. Also as she's bald on her neck, it wouldn't explain that either. Her skin isn't red so she hasn't scratched herself raw.

The vet's not really sure what it is which is why I'm asking on here. :) Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Did the vet take a skin sample to look for any mites etc? Highly unlikely if she hasn't been exposed yo any animals she's not normally around, but worth ruling out anyway. Hope she's better soon.
