  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is my rabbit deaf?

I've suspected for some time that my rabbit could be deaf - he is a lop eared, approx 2, I've had him a year after adopting him - he was a stray.

But this morning when I went into the shed he had no clue I had come in as he was grooming himself - I spoke to him and nothing and it was only when I touched him did he realise I was there.

Is this common?

He is very lolloppy, not fast or agile unlike his Dutch girl bunfriend. He wiggles when he lollops, can't jump much, doesn't run fast, and kinda looks a bit unsteady on his feet.

He was at the vet just after Xmas for a check up and was fine, he had a UTI which he was on meds for.

If he has ear infections that could be the cause of his balance problems. Skull x-rays may well be useful x

I've often wondered whether or not my Louis' hearing is that good. If he is washing or eating with his back to me, I have to make a sharp noise to get his attention, more than just calling his name several times. I would imagine that a lop (he is a frenchie) wouldn't have as good a sense of hearing as a rabbit
with upright ears, his health appears excellent otherwise.
