This little man came in to a local vet on Saturday as a stray after being found wandering the streets.

With no owner and being in a very sorry state the most likely option for him was pts; we wanted to give the poor mite a chance but just didn't have the room to offer him a permanent home. :( Thanks to an amazingly kind and generous offer of a home at Rainbow Rabbits once he's well enough to travel, we were able to take him in temporarily here and help him on the road to recovery. I know Liz and Steve will make sure he lives the kind of life that he deserves.:love:

He's underweight, has suspected EC - slight head tilt, weak back legs - and a bad mite infestation as well as ear mites. His face was thick, crusty and matted and his bum was matted too so they had to shave a lot of fur off & gave his tear ducts a flush. They also suspected he was blind although, now we've had him home for a couple of days, we think he has at least some vision as he's not bumping into everything like we'd have expected. His eyes bulge slightly though, and the third eyelids are visible, even more so when he's stressed.

He had a seizure last night :( so has now also been to see a lovely exotics vet who's giving him a course of steroids which should help with all his issues & he's been stable since then. He's got ear drops for the mites and is also on panacur for the ec. Despite all he's been through he's quite bright and is eating really well so we're hopeful he has a fighting chance.

He's not the most attractive man right now, bless him, but that just makes him all the more lovable to us. So, yes, as title if you could keep this man in your thoughts it would be appreciated.

It was a relief to read that his face had been shaved as I wondered what was going on, face fur must be fluffier than I realised as I thought it was ulcers or such.

So glad he's found his way to safety and to have a chance at a wonderful life and that he can be well and able to travel to his forever home very soon.

Sending bucket loads of vibes.

Thank you all. I forgot to actually mention as I was so busy listing all his problems  but he's called Taz for now (he reminds my daughter of the Tasmanian Devil and has started living up to his name now he's a little stronger!:lol::lol:); Liz has a new name all lined up for him when he gets there though.

Alison, I never realised just how bulky the fur on their face was either; it makes his nose area look a rather peculiar shape, even more so now some of the crust is coming away. It's hard to tell from the photos as I think they make his face look gunky it's all dry, really thick crust.

It always amazes me just how resilient bunnies can be given their fragile nature and Taz is no exception. I'll keep you updated with pics of his progress and I've made Liz promise she will once he gets there too!

He's still doing well and his face looks so much better already as much of the crust is dropping off now. He's had his 2nd steroid shot this afternoon (not an easy job on a very thin rabbit with skin like a rhino :() and has been munching his way through a huge pile of timothy hay for the last couple of hours. He's trying to hop about a bit faster now and sometimes ends up falling to one side because of his weak back legs :( so we're trying to keep the exercise to short periods so he doesn't tire himself out too much.

This little chap has been in my thoughts-just wondering how hes doing?

He's still hanging in there, thanks for asking. The photo below (just for Susan ;)) is from Thursday and there's a huge difference in his face already now lots of the nasty crusting has come off. He was hopping about last night and ended up toppling right over onto his back & struggled to get up :( but I think he was just trying to do too much too soon. Once he righted himself he seemed fine and he's been in the crate with lots of rolled up towels to help support him.

http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q481/KarenM33/Taz.jpg (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/KarenM33/media/Taz.jpg.html)

He is such an easy bunny to handle and seems very happy around us humans; I do wonder whether he was well-loved at some point, or if he's just a laid back bunny or too poorly to have the energy to escape. All the kids love him and I have to give my eldest daughter most of the credit for taking care of him & she's doing a grand job.

The pink suits him, doesn't it, Susan.

Liz, the skin underneath all the yukky crust is lovely and hopefully his fur will grow back really quickly now. When it started coming off I was dreading what was going to be underneath tbh. Most of the crust left on isn't actually attached to the skin, it's just all caked round the fur. He's grooming lots though and hopefully most should come off of its own accord now it's loose.

Just a quick update. Taz is looking so much better already but still has a way to go.

His face fur is growing back nicely but the rest of him still feels like he needs a really good brush even though we've been doing it every day. He hasn't had any more seizures & is getting stronger; he's now able to lift both his front paws off the ground to groom himself without toppling over but is still wobbly on his back legs and one of them seems to turn in at a funny angle.

He's going back to the vet on Monday for a check up and, all being well, he should be going to Liz and Steve in a couple of weeks time.

Anyway, enough chat - can you see the difference already?

Does your bunny have other symptoms that suggest EC? My vet has been specialising in exotics for many years & said he's very rarely seen seizures with cases of EC so he couldn't completely rule out other possibilities like epilepsy. Thankfully, Taz hasn't had a seizure since though.

Many vets would recommend panacur and metacam in cases of suspected EC but my vet felt that, with all the other issues Taz has that the steroids would be a better option for him overall (not just the seizure but the hind leg weakness & the severe ear mite infestation which would have been causing swelling and discomfort inside his ears).

I don't have any experience with seizures or EC though, so this has all been a bit of a steep learning curve for me so others might be able to advise more.

BYB, those first photos are what he looked like when we got him home after a 2 day stay at the vets. He originally looked even worse - they'd already shaved a lot of his face as it was so matted and crusted up, along with a lot of his underneath. The nurses didn't take a photo when he came in but it's hard to imagine how he must have looked at first. :(

Hi Karen

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply :)

There's no prior evidence of him having symptoms of E.C., but his partner developed head tilt suddenly and the vet put them both on Panacur immediately. He had a seizure three weeks after starting the Panacur, which left him unable to walk. Fortunately he's much better now.

The vet feels the differential diagnosis for both of them is a stroke, even though both within three weeks is a coincidence. She would like more info on the subject but it seems to be something not a lot of people have experienced.

A good friend of mine has told me of a case with one of her rabbits which sounds very similar, but she never got to the bottom of the cause of that seizure.

Thanks once again Karen :)

No problem, and sorry I wasn't really of much help. I'm glad bunny's doing better already but it might be worth starting a new thread asking for advice on it though as others who've come across similar would be more likely to see it.

Taz went to the vet yesterday and also had his scent glands cleaned when he got home as one of them was absolutely minging  so he wasn't too impressed. He's definitely got more life in him now too as he thumped for the first 10 minutes of the car journey!:lol:

His eyes had been watering a little over the past week but the discharge had become quite thick and sticky over the last couple of days so, even with regular cleaning, it was a little bit crusted again yesterday. He's had his tear ducts flushed and one was completely blocked so he's now on a course of depocillin injections, fucithalmic drops for the eyes and we have orabase to put on the surrounding skin to protect it. He looks a little worse now than the other day as a result of all the prodding about yesterday but hopefully the meds will help.

The vet wasn't worried about his weight but said that he has quite a lot of muscle wastage on his back legs so that's probably the cause of his weakness & wobbliness. The build up in his ears is clearing nicely so the ear drops seem to be doing the trick and overall we're pleased with his progress.

I think that covers everything  so I'll leave you with this photo of the little monkey giving us his evil stare while he was waiting for that container full of pellets in the background to magically open.:lol:

I had a bunny who had seizures after a diagnosis of EC, though I seem to remember there was a gap between them. I can't find all the vet records for that atm. She was treated with daily epiphen and lived a further three years on it, surpassing anyone's expectations. Watching a bunny sieze is horrible.

The meds are helping his eyes already as they don't seem to be crusting as much & he's due another tear duct flush sometime this week to help it along. He's such a good little patient and doesn't struggle at all. It's hard to find enough skin to inject him though so I've been letting my daughter do that bit while I hold him  (in my defence she's a trainee vet nurse so she's had more practice than I have!:lol:)

His character's coming out more and more all the time & he's so different from the lifeless little bunny that just wanted to hunch up in the corner of the cage when I first met him.
