Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Goji - guts, lumps & xrays...

New Kit
Hi,

I just wanted to ask for advice/share my story for future ref (if I get a resolution that is...)

I have a lovely lil bun called Goji (bf named him after his fave metal band, Gojira lol) about a week ago he seemed to be a lot quieter, lethargic, eating & pooping a bit less, maybe 50% of what he usually does.

Took him to the vets who found dental spurs & a much more worrying lump in his belly  They said initially to give painkillers, syringe feed & gut stimulants. In case it was an impaction & to build him up a bit for any potential surgery.

After this he seemed to pick up a lot, took meds like a trouper, refused critical care but started eating more veggies & hay. Seems to be almost back to normal, I'd say he went up to about 85% of his normal intake & output.

2nd vet visit yesterday to do the dental procedure & xrays of tummy. Dental all okay, not too many spurs.

But the xray has totally baffled the vet :? She said there is a lump, she can't tell what it is, but seemingly it's giving him no pain/trouble, but more oddly it looks to her like his tummy is filled up with something that looks like grit, but she can't see any gas. I could see the 'grit' on the xray, it was really odd. She said it almost looks like he's had a fecal eruption internally - but that doesn't make sense as he's still eating, pooping & seems happy & bright in himself.

Luckily the vet is great & is sending his xrays off to an exotics specialist for them to look over & see if they have any ideas. But it's now a waiting game. It's so confusing for us - we've no idea what it is or if he's in pain & just plodding on (like bunnies do!) breaks my heart to think that there might be something seriously wrong

Don't suppose anyone has any ideas/experience with anything like this??

Thanks,
Lynne.

Ah yes sorry the vet did say his wee after the op was sludgy. I've not been able to see anything as it's already soaked into litter...
Pretty sure he's drinking less so I've been syringing him water just in case.

Oh gosh, how stressful! I don't have any ideas I'm afraid, just want to send vibes. I've found cucumber and wet herbs very useful for dehydration. Also, my buns always loved 'Science recovery' while they'd turn up their twitchy noses at Critical Care, so you could see if you could get hold of that if he goes off his food again?

Lots of luck, let us know what the specialist says.

Sorry I don't have any further advice to add, but I hope you get some answers quickly and Goji can be easily treated xxx

Thanks all - I'll pass the good wishes onto him :)

He seems to be doing pretty well the past couple of days, almost back to his troublemaker self! I've been wetting his veggies & syringing water to him just in case he's not getting enough.

No word from specialist yet - my phone is the most watched phone of all time lol
