Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Panacur questions

Young Bun
Hi there

I'm planning on treating my three bunnies this month with the panacur worming paste for rabbits. Im going to be using this one http://www.animeddirect.co.uk/panacur-rabbit-oral-worming-paste-5g.html. The instructions say to use 1 graduation per 2.5kg of body weight. All my rabbits weigh around 1.3kg. So I'm guessing rabbits up to 2.5kg have 1 graduation? Can anyone also tell me how many graduations are on a syringe so I cant work out how much I need.

Thanks

Can't help with amount, just wondering why you are giving your rabbits Panacur as I don't think most people give it unless rabbits are ill.

None of them are ill, I was only going to treat them as Animed recommend treating them 2-4 times yearly. It that not advised then? I did read somewhere that dosing when there aren't any symptoms can make EC immune if they were to get it in the future?

I remember there was a thread about this not so long ago and the great majority of people said they don't believe in treating on a 'just in case' basis and, yes, I think someone did say that if it is used regularly it may not work if the rabbit became ill and needed it.

I only treat with a one off 28 day course of Panacur. I do not use it again unless clinical symptoms dictate that it is truly necessary. Fenbendazole (the active ingredient in Panacur) can compromise the formation of bone marrow if over-used. Also there is the risk of it becoming ineffective.

They can have 1 graduation. I wouldn't listen to the 2-4 times per year suggestion on the box. I do mine when they first come here and that's it really, apart from Flora who had EC and I treat her every 6 months. If I don't treat her she has a flare up so for me it works best
