  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Can anyone help!!!? Urine infection

charlieekins

Young Bun
I think my rabbit has a urine infection, wondering what treatment she would receive and if anyone else's rabbit has had this before?
I'm phoning my vet tomorrow but I have also noticed like red calluses on her front nails which I haven't seen before and have just appeared.

Any symptom/advice/medication they would receive and what I can do until my vet appointment would be so helpful!

Thanks

What makes you think he has a UTI ?

Little urination, not using the litter tray, stained fur at her legs and bottom area , she is sitting differently are just a couple to mention. She looks uncomfortable also. She had statis in December so its another thing now which has cropped up.

It may be that she has bladder sludge, a build up of calcium deposits in her bladder. This can cause cystitis and infection. An abdominal xray would show it this were the case, the Vet may also be able to feel a sludgey bladder when palpating it. Bladder stones can also form and the condition can progress to effect the kidneys. She would need antibiotics and regular ongoing pain relief. She may need to have her bladder flushed out under GA. Fluid therapy (IV/subcutaneous injection and oral) is also likely to be necessary.

If her skin is scalded from being urine soaked that will require treatment too.

It is important that the Vet sees her ASAP as if she is struggling to urinate things could become extremely serious

Good luck.
