  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to the Vets we go!

Dillan's right eye started watering yesterday - I haven't had a watery eye for years so I wondered what could be wrong. A blocked tear duct, or teeth problems? He isn't on shavings or anything dusty and he is a really good hay eater. The Vet said there's pus here and I started thinking worst case scenarios, then looking under the bottom lid she found a hay husk! What a relief! Put a drop of anaesthetic in and a minute later the offending husk had been removed. Phew! He was such a good boy too for the Vet.

Glad to hear it wasn't anything serious! Ginger had a habit of having bits of hay and stuff in her eyes too, so appreciate how concerning it could be!

I'm like that too but Alfie does indeed have a blocked tear duct, and his other eye has a malformed tear duct which can't be flushed anyway so whenever I see a bit of weepy eye I get really nervous and have an anxious few days to wait to see if it reoccurs after it's been cleaned! Thankfully it's not come back before, so I just assume it was a bit of hay that's poked him or something. Glad Dillan's eye is ok
