  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Molting question...

Snooba

Warren Scout
Hi, I should probably say that Billy has been off meds for a bit now, and things are mostly OK :)

However something odd is going on, maybe you can advice. Billy had a really bad episode of bloat, most likely caused by his massive molting. While we were treating him, he stopped molting. Now that he is cured, he has started again, molting what remains of his winter fur.

This had made him go off food a bit (still eats, but less), and he spent the whole day sleeping (not looking poorly, but sleeping, as if he had just ran a marathon).

Rabbits are supposed to eat more when they are molting, to compensate for the energy spent growing the new fur, but Billy hasn't. Some days he is super energetic, and some he just wants to rest.

I don't want to start with his gut medicines again, so what can I do to give him a hand?

Just groom off as much lose fur as many times a day as is necessary to minimise how much he ingests. Then just continue with the diet that suits him best which I am assuming is one based on 80-90% hay and a good water intake :)
