Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lionhead weight.

Hello all,

I have a 9 month old purebred Lionhead as you all may know - hes always been a tiny thing. When getting him at 9 weeks old he weighed just 900 grams.. now hes 1.1kg. Do you think this is normal for his age or should he be heavier?

I understand that purebred lionheads are generally the same sizes/weights as netherland dwarfs..

Lionheads tend to be heavier than that but ultimately with rabbits it is more about what their body condition is like. If you're not sure, get the vet to check him over.

Lionhead is a pretty new breed so there is likely to be more variation in the standard. Also, many breeders that breed 'purebred' bunnies do cross other breeds in, in order to achieve certain qualities. It may be that your lionhead has more nethie in than most.

Oh dear - Harley is a bit of a chubbie then ...last vet visit she weigheed 1.8kgs - she does feel quite solid too...

I wouldn't worry. Levi is a lion lop and the breed standard weight for them is 1.5-1.6kg. Last time I weighed him he was 2kg. But he isn't chubby. I would have thought the breed standard is the ideal weight rather than the typical weight.
