Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit may have hurt his leg??

Hi, I've recently got a rabbit called dobby, he's under 1 year old and I've noticed when he's sitting he's not putting any weight on his front leg and keeps tucking it behind instead but he won't let me touch it. He walks on it fine but is constantly licking it. I could take him to the vets but that will be £20 just to look, is it anything serious??

Seriously?

Please take your rabbit to see a vet - he's likely in a lot of pain and could have serious injuries. His leg could be broken, he could have broken toes, could be anything, a vet is your place to go!

I took Levi to the vet on Saturday. She checked him over, gave him an injection and some extra medication to take orally if needed and it came to £45. Levi was absolutely fine within a few hours but I am so glad I took him, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Rabbits are prey animals so will disguise any illnesses or injuries as long as possible. Just because your rabbit is walking on the foot does not mean it isn't painful. I would definitely be seeing a vet as soon as possible.

Hello :)

Your Rabbit does need to be examined by a Vet to ascertain whether or not he has an injury. Whilst it can be that Vet consults come at bad times for us and our cash flow situation it is something we take on responsibility for when we acquire a pet. Your Rabbit may have a simple sprain which will heal itself. But he may be is some pain and I am sure you would not like to be without pain killers if you had a sprained leg. Also, when in pain Rabbits can develop gut problems which create even more issues that can become costly to treat.

I would arrange an appointment with your Vet. Good luck.
