  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How would you tell if there was blood in poo?

This is to do with Cheech really, my chinchilla. I just need to know something. If a rabbit has gastrointestinal bleeding would there be blood in the poo? And could you crumble a poo on wet paper to see if it went red to see if there was blood in it?

I think it would be the same for a chinchilla if it was the case for a rabbit.

The vet couldn't figure out where the blood was coming from. We don't want a PM but I just wanted to know this thing.

Thank you.

Blood in feces is not always visible to the naked eye. It would depend on what part of the GI tract it came from. So even if you cant actually see blood either mixed in with or coating the feces, it may be there. It is called 'occult blood' and a specific test is needed to detect that- a Fecal Occult Blood (FOB) test.

I dont know if it is the same for Chins, but Rabbits have a very, very vascular area at the back of their mouth. Given that you said Cheech had recently developed Dental problems I wonder if the blood came from his mouth ? If he was poorly in some other way too maybe his liver function was compromised so his blood clotting may not have been good, hence the haemorrhage ?
