Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cleaning scent glands?

I think they're called scent glands. The little folds either side of the genitals?

Checked Pippin's today for the first time for a long time and there's brown waxy stuff in there (sorry, so gross!) and I was wondering how and how often do you clean your buns?

I was thinking warm water and cotton buds?

Is it bad that she has stuff in there?

Rabbits should be able to keep their scent glands clean themselves, but for various reasons some do not/can not do so.For example Rabbits with dental problems may not be very thorough in the grooming department. Same applies to Rabbits with any mobility problems.

A small amount of wax in the folds of skin is normal,I only clean them if needed,if there is a large accumulation of wax. I do not do it as part of an ongoing routine. I use a cotton bud dipped in olive oil. The skin is VERY delicate in that area so great care is needed so as not to tear it.

Oh okay. Thank you! I don't think I'll clean them then as it is only a small amount but I'll keep an eye on them.
