Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Blackened broken bone + amputation in old rabbits. UD/ checking how it's healing

Has anyone experienced this? Simba in in for an x ray now. It's in her foot. If it's that bad can it be saved? And would you consider amputation of a back leg in a eight year old rabbit?

Oh dear  do you know how it broke? I guess for me it would depend on whether there was a reason that the bone broke, or whether the bun has a problem with her bones and hence whether amputating might just cause the same to happen on the other side when the weight transfers. Is she bearing any weight on it now or is all the weight on the other leg already?

If it is a toe then it may be possible to just amputate just that. I would want to establish whether the fracture was due to a traumatic injury or if it was a pathological fracture

The x ray shows the whole foot is dislocated as well and the bone is infected. She is already putting all her weight on the other foot. The vet things she caught it and pulled it to do that. :(

It's quite far up near her heel. I'm not sure if it is a toe or not. The vet is speaking to the specialist now.

Unless there was an underlying disease process which could not be helped, I'd certainly give the bunny a chance.

Poor poor thing. :(

My bridge bun Billy had something similar. I think the vet called it a shattered hock? They tried to save the leg by pinning it, but it was only once he was under GA and shaved that they found the bone was infected, so the leg was amputated. He made a full recovery and coped well on three legs.

He was a younger bun though, and we think it was caused by him hearing a noise and bolting. So not quite the same.

Sending lots of vibes for Simba xx

The bunny that I recently fostered while he recovered from hind leg amputation was an old lad. His back leg was completely crushed. It is Tommy Trooper who went to live with Theo. He coped very well with the op. We don't know the exact age of Tommy Trooper as he was handed in to Kirkby rescue with the shattered leg, but he looked old and the vet said his teeth pointed to him being an old bunny too.

Sending loads of vibes for Simba xx

Will be thinking of her on Friday.

I've cared for two hind limb amputees this year and it is amazing how quickly they adapt to life on three legs. Will keep everything crossed for Simba xx

I don't have any experience in this area, but sending Simba millions of vibes for her op.

And big (((((((((HUGS))))))))) for you xxx

Found my way to this thread from your other one as I want to keep an eye on Simba's progress. Poor little thing, I have all my fingers crossed for you and her xx

I would guess if the vets done an xray that would have shown up any arthritis which would be the long term problem with shifting weight to one leg instead of two. So the main other issue with older bunnies is aneasthetic and my thoughts are going under aneasthetic is no different to being PTS so you might as well give it ago :) I hope it goes well!

I have had hind leg amputees that have coped well - but were younger - however I also had a bun who had a kidney removal aged 9 and he coped brilliantly!!!

Oh Jenova, I am so sorry to hear this about Simba. :( I have no experience here but will be praying and sending vibes that all will be well with her op. xxxx

Thank you everyone. All your replies are very much appreciated. They did a conscious x ray which was amazing and the exotic vets we're going to for the operation have a special anaesthetic for small animals. I forget what it's called. My sister is very scared to put her under at eight, almost nine years old, but the way we see it we don't have much choice. If we don't operate the infection will spread. There is a risk but we don't see an alternative and we can't give up on her. Thank youb all so much for the vibes. Just hoping she'll be okay until Friday.

The normal vets would have operated today but admitted they had little experience and only the cat and dog anaesthetic. The exotic vets did not want to do such a major op without a full team which means waiting until Friday, which we chose. We think it must have been broken for weeks, even though my sister checks them daily and my brother only noticed she wasn't using it a couple of days ago. That's when they looked closer and my sister saw a cut. They thought it must have just happened. It's so lucky she came to mine as I have the excellent exotic vets.
