Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Hair loss, just moulting or mites?

Pritch

New Kit
Hi all, I have a rabbit, shadow. He's about 9 months old, he has started to loss a bit of hair on his back, just behind his head. There is a bit of flakey skin as well buts only in this one spot. I've been reading up online so I'm starting to think its mites. He's seems fine in himself and doesn't seem to be scratching excessively.

Any advice if somebody's been through a similar thing would great thank you

If that's the only patch with the lose fur, then yes, it could be mites. When moulting they generally lose a lot! Normally I'd say you could try waiting another day or two and see if he starts an actual moult but that puts us at Christmas, so I'd pop him in and get it treated now to avoid the vet closures :)

Ok, thanks I'll get him booked in tomorrow.

I forgot to say in my first post that I have 2 other rabbits, they live in a different hutch next to shadow but run around our lounge and are often held either before or after him. Am I right in thinking they could well catch them to if he does have them? They are show no signs at all, fur in normal and are behaving like themselves.

They can transfer, but often an individual can get it without any other in the household developing the problem. I expect the vet will just treat him, but it wouldn't hurt to wash hands between handling them just in case.
