Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Have found what I think is an abscess

I know it's difficult, but please don't give up hope Jasmine. Adam has been treating my April and a friends Giant for tooth abcesses and both have been doing well under his supervision.

I don't know how to function. I didn't think it could get any worse :(

Tooth root abscesses can be problematic, but treatment is very possible. Even if a full cure cannot be achieved long term medication can 'hold' things and significantly reduce the rate at which the disease progresses.

Did the RCVS give you any results about Pumpkin ? Having that tragedy still so raw and not knowing 'why' must be awful

:( I'm sorry, how worrying for you. Got fingers crossed and keeping Pippin in my thoughts. Hope it's something that can be treated quickly and easily.

Sending *hugs* xx

Can they surgically remove it? She's not the kind of rabbit that will tolerate long term hands on treatment.

I haven't had any results yet as it takes up to 3 weeks. I don't feel like I've had time to grieve, I just want to try and move on and concentrate on doing the best I can for Pippin but now this has happened.

Yes, surgery is usually needed. As to how much can be removed that would depend on the extent of the infection. If the core of infection is in a tooth root then it may involve extraction of the offending tooth/root. This would be an op' I would only want a specialist to carry out.

I know it's hard not to think 'worst case scenarios'. After the year I have had (11 losses ) I am permanently thinking that way. But try to deal with what you know to be fact rather than thinking of all the 'what ifs'. Hopefully tomorrow the Vet can suggest a plan of action regarding treatment options xx

Thank you Jane, I appreciate the information you give me so much.

So sorry to hear about your losses :( so sad. I'm going to try to be strong.

Harvey had a tooth root abscess, it was caught very early and treated with an antibiotic called Marbocyl for 10 days and he is fine now :) the bony lump has almost completely gone (I was told even if the infection goes the bony lump can persist forever or takes ages to go down)

Hopefully your vet can get treat pippin with medicine, if not surgery is an option, scary, but if done by a specialist vet it'll be successful as treatment :)

Oh, my dear, I have no words. But sending vibes and prayers that Pippin will be okay.
(((((((Huge hugs)))))) for you. Will be thinking of you tomorrow. xxxx

It's not an abscess!!!! :) so relieved but still very paranoid as there was some sort of scab there. I think from Pumpkin trying to bite Fibreplex off of her face.

Thank you all so much for your support

I'm now going to concentrate on remembering and celebrating the nice life I gave Pumpkin while I could, and giving Pippin everything I can now

Thank you again xxx
