Vet talking rubbish?!?!

Ok so I took my single bun ted to the vets today to discuss being neutered and the plan was to check today and book procedue for next week. Unfortunately teds man bits r a little small so he will have to wait another month to see if he grows some more.
I was actually shocked at the vets as he told me that he doesn't recommend neutering male rabbits unless they are living with a female rabbit and he also said that 2 entire male rabbits live well together !
The whole reason I want ted neutered is because the plan is to bond him to my pair and I understand the neutering will calm him for this process. If the trio bond doesnt work then I will get ted a friend .
I was shocked at how he was basically saying ted could b bonded with my pair without neutering and I could even get him a male to live with without neutering! Is my vet completly taliking out of his backside ? !!

Yes he is, his views are wrong and outdated and it is likely his medical knowledge of rabbits is outdated too - I wouldn't be letting that vet operate on my rabbit

That is a vet whose knowledge of rabbits is 'minimal'.

Please do not let him operate on your rabbit - find a good knowledgeable up tp date vet. Anaesthetics for rabbits are very different to cats and dogs and he does not sound as though he will be up to date on that and may put your rabbit at risk.

You may want to send him some material from the RWA with the suggestions that he attends a conference!

A more generous description than the one I have in mind !!

Thanku for your replies .... I will b seriously thinking about changing vet now ! No wonder theres so many unwanted bunnies in the world...he actually said ' I dont really push for neutering in rabbits like I would dogs and cats ' I couldnt believe my ears ! Any recommendations on vets in the Hampshire / dorset ringwood area ??

Aside from the unwanted babies issue, there is also the issue of the raging hormones the poor bunnies would be subjected to for their whole lives, I'm really surprised there are still vets who are THAT clueless!!

I left a vets after they told me it was pointless spaying a female bun as my male was already neutered. I wouldn't of minded if they'd of considered my reasons and looked into it but they basically told me I was making all the info up or had read it of some dodgey website. When I explained it was from the RWAF of which I am a member they phoned them to check I was telling the truth. I couldn't find a new vets quick enough!

I am going to be googling for a new vet asap! Trouble is I dont know which onea are good and which onea are not :(

I thought we had a sticky of rabbit savvy vets?

It might be worth making a new thread asking for a rabbit savvy vet in Hampshire / dorset ringwood area as it's more visible to people browsing.

If you ring the RWAF they will be able to tell you ones which either have been recommended by members or who subscribe to RWAF.

All the companion care ones round here subscribe to rwaf so are on the list - perhaps all the practices do? Never used them, but I imagine each practice will vary in quality. They're the vets that you find inside big P@H stores.

Not sure if Southampton is too far? I'm sure Helennnnn has a good vet there?

To find my vet I rang around the vets in my area and asked to speak to the exotic specialist vet there. I then asked him questions about rabbit care
http://rabbit.org/faq-how-to-find-a-good-rabbit-vet/

I asked him to explain how they neutered rabbits at the vets, the vet I was with didn't do it the right was they used antibiotics ect the next vets I rang said the exact correct way which I found out by looking on the net and ringing 3 highly regarded vets that I also found on the web and asked them how they did it. That's how I found my vets and know they are good. So if you cant find a good vet from someone on here you can always interview them yourself

I, too, use John Chitty of Anton Vets, Andover.

There is another lady in Romsey, if that's any better for you, .......... just trying to think of her name ....
