You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Rosie post spaying

Hey guys,

I think I am just being an anxious mum but I could really do with some advice. I rescued a rabbit 2months ago at 4mths old and was advised to get her spayed this week. She had her spay on Monday and seemed ok post op, she was up and running around quickly according to the vets. She seemed abit groggy on her way home but I thought that was to be expected. However she hasn't eaten since then. I saw the vet Tuesday afternoon who gave her a gut stimulant and said he wasn't worried. She was pooing and weeing ok but now her poos seem smaller. She has eaten a couple of bits of hay and pellets and I tried to get some fluids/recovery sachet down her (about 20ml) but she was so distressed by it I'm hesitant to do it again. She keeps honking/grunting intermittently but is moving around a bit and flops on her side every now and then. The vet didn't give her any pain relief which I'm annoyed about. I have a vets appointment for weds morning but I'm terrified that she has stasis. Has anybody got any advice they can give me?

Thank you ,

A very anxious mum Lizzy

temporary advice from a non-specialist:
do continue with trying to feed her and give her drinks. where are you? someone might be able to suggest a rabbit savvy vet in your area. she should have pain relief, so ask for it directly when you see the vet.
my tabby rabbit had a hard time with and after her spay but eventually came through.

Regular pain relief is essential !! Honestly I despair of some Vets

A spay is a hysterectomy- invasive abdominal surgery which will cause pain for several days. A Rabbit in pain wont eat and their GI tract motility will slow down

So if the Vet has not prescribed regular analgesic cover then please demand it. I doubt the Vet would be too impressed to be sent home from hospital after invasive abdominal surgery and no pain relief !!

Hope Rosie feels better soon xx

Also, have you tried her with grass or Spring Greens. I have had quite a few rabbits spayed and I have noticed they will eat these if nothing else. Try to keep her quiet and stress-free. Hope she improves today.

I definately agree with Jacks Jane in that poor Rosie is no doubt not eating because of pain. Probably best I don't post my thoughts on any vet sending a bunny home following surgery without any pain relief

I would be making a formal complaint to the Practice Manager, to prevent this happening to someone else.

Poor Rosie. :( She'll defintitely need pain relief, as others have said. Hope she starts to feel better soon. Herbs like parsley are often quite tempting to a bunny who has been off food, have you tried these?

Update :)

Hey guys,

Thank you for all of the messages of advice. I am absolutely fuming regarding the vet. The most ridiculous thing is that she is a rescue rabbit and the voucher we had been given for her to have a free neutering was for this specific vet practice which makes the fact that she wasn't given any pain relief even more shocking! In future I am going to take her to a rabbit savvy vet near us, but I shall definitely be complaining as the way that they have treated her and spoken to myself/my partner is outrageous! She was seen at the vets today who said that her gut is making plenty of sounds, her tummy is soft and that she just needs to keep drinking and eating. After your messages I bought her some greens and kale and SUCCESS!!! She is eating the greens and kale. She has had a little bit of hay and a few greens, no pellets as of yet but veg and hay is better than nothing I am sure, and hopefully she will slowly increase how much she is eating. She isn't really drinking, but do you think that she will be getting some water from the veggies? She has started pooing today as well, they aren't perfectly formed poos but they are on their way so I feel happier and hopefully she will keep on improving :)

Thank you for all of your support,

A slightly happier mummy :)

Good to see the update on Daisy's eating. I don't have experience of a post-spay bun, but if she is eating greens she will be getting some water that way. Hopefully she will soon show an interest in her pellets. It is good that she is eating and pooing, and I think it is fairly normal for the first poos after an op to look a bit odd.
