Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vaccination 2 days post neuter - OK?

Wise Old Thumper
A friend took 2 rabbits off me which we thought were sisters, It soon became apparent that one was not a female so the boy was neutered on Tuesday and he went for his 2-day check today . The Vet was quite happy to vaccinate him and I asked if it was too soon after his neuter and she said no. Has anyone else experienced this?

When I asked my vet if we could do this she said no. She vaccinated first then neutered a week later.

My vet used to leave 2 weeks - as with a weakened immune system the vaccine response will be poor meaning it will not be as effective

I didn't realise she had booked him in to be vaccinated as I had gone in the shop otherwise I would have persuaded her not to. I was quite shocked when the Vet got the vaccine out. I hope he will be all right. She also bought some straw to put in their litter tray and I explained about that but I don't think she likes the idea of a rabbit eating hay and pooing at the same time.

Hope bunny is ok. I'm no expert but wouldn't have liked to have a rabbit vaccinated so soon after neuter. Spenser took about a week to recover!

Apparently he is fine today. They're settling in to their new home, got a small room to themselves so gone from "rags to riches" and they certainly deserve it as they are the friendliest rabbits you could have. So here's to a long and happy life for them.

Interesting you raised this.. Flymo was vaccinated this year on his 3 day check post-neutering. They wouldn't do the same for Rosie. I wonder if it's the scale/size of the op? (And actually, writing this reminds me we didn't take her back for her vaccinations )
