Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Alfie is under the weather- any ideas what's wrong?

Young Bun
I have him booked for an appointment in an hour and a half but just wondering if anyone has any ideas whats up with my little bun
He hasn't eaten very well for about a day and a half now, won't eat his favourite biscuits and hasn't touched his pellets. Occasionally he eats some hay but he's just sitting around mostly.
Not much pooing either, he looks like he's going to eat his softer poo (cant remember the name of them) but doesn't seem to actually get any out
I've looked at his bottom and it looks clean
I've also noticed his stomach growls really loudly!

I have him indoors with me, he's drinking a lot but won't come out of his box for a run around

Thankyou!
He had a dental a few months ago I think, it seems a bit soon for him if it is dental
He's sitting next to me at the moment looking glum but we'll be leaving soon, will post an update :)

Update!
The vet felt around his tummy, said he could feel only his stomach, no food and maybe a bit of fluid and small blockage
he gave him an injection to help him along and then also gave me it in an oral form to feed him 4 times a day
I also have some recovery paste and a huuuge syringe so just had a little go of feeding him with it, he ate some of it!
on the way to the vets he did poo a bit (hurrah!) and had a grape before we left

so hopefully that means he won't starve!

I'm sorry if we can't double post on a forum but...

Alfie has eaten a few greens and had about 10/15ml of Oxbow critical care

he had hopped around a bit indoors, done 3 very small poos

but now is back to his mopey sitting hunched and seems to be grinding his teeth a bit
I'm at a bit of a loss of what to do, does anyone have any advice please?

Take him back to the vets asap, he is in pain if he is grinding his teeth.

It may be his teeth again but sometimes xrays need to be done to spot things which the eye can't see.

Good luck.

Okay thankyou,
he has bouts of where he'll get up and hop around
but now has gone back to laying down
:(

I will contact the vets now

What medicine have you been given for him just out of interest. He needs to get back to the vets though.

Sorry don't mean to worry you but grinding of the teeth is a sign of pain and he won't eat if he is in pain.

No it's fine I'd rather know he needed to be seen than to leave him in pain

he was given an injection called metoclopramide and some oral medication called emeprid?

Metroclopramide is always given to help the gut move along. Doughnut is now on it long term.

I would have thought your vet would also give you metacam as this is a pain relief and if your rabbit is in pain like I said it won't eat and as you know rabbits need to be constantly eating to keep their gut going. Emeprid is the same thing, it's metroclopramide.

Did you manage to get another appointment. Is your vet rabbit savvy?

Ah I see
I don't know about rabbit savvy, but Alfie is well known at the vets because of regular dentals and the vet is always really good with him.

I have just taken him up there, they double checked for molar spurs, none at all and he said this time he could feel more of a little lump in his abdomen
they've decided to keep him in for now to monitor him which I'm happy with as I was worried about him. The nurse on duty today is the nurse that absolutely adores him and has rabbits with tummy and dental problems herself

Oh that's good as they can give him fluids if he isn't eating too and pain relief to get him going again. Pleased he's in the best care. Let us know how he gets on.

Just a quick update as im on my phone!
Last night the vet rang and asked for us to bring in pineapple juice and some greena from home to encourage him to eat. This morning I rang and they said he's slowly getting there, had small bits of food and also some of the juice. Did a few small poos last night but none since so theyre still a bit concerned. I might not be able to takw him home yet but he sounds in good hands :)

Do they think he has an obstruction? If so I'm not sure but I thought gut meds could make it worse?

Re the pinapple juice - it has to be fresh not from a carton as it wont have the active enzyme, but this is becoming less used now as the sugar in it can actually make gut problems worse and outweigh the benefits.

Are they giving pain relief now?

Yes a specialist I spoke to didn't recommend pineapple juice at all as it's sugar content and also the acidity. It can make their tummies worse.

I hope he gets better soon.

He's home!! Hurrah :)
They didnt mention an obstruction so I am not sure what specifically was wrong but it was pure juice not from concentrate that he had. He was on both the emeprid and metacam and this afternoon apparently perked up, pooed lots and ate lots!! We got him home and he enjoyed lots of green beans :)
Its such a relief to have him home.
:)
