Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Harvey head shaking and drooping ear

bizziel

Alpha Buck
Just got home from work and noticed my boy bun Harvey is shaking his head a lot and his left ear is drooping. He is also scratching at it a bit. When i got in he was sitting in his cage looking sorry for himself. I've encouraged him out with some pellets which he ate and now he's hopping about and doesn't seem too 'poorly', but still looks like his ear is bothering him and he is shaking his head every now and then. Do you think he has an ear infection or does it sound like something else?

My OH will take him to the vet tomorrow, do you think he needs to go sooner? So worried!

My only thought is ear mites but perhaps someone with more knowledge will see your thread.

Sounds like an ear infection, maybe secondary to ear mites. If it is an infection he will be in pain so I would call the Vet for advice this evening.

Sorrell did this when he had an ear infection, it is a very painful condition and I would prefer to get him seen asap.. if it gets worse he may stop eating completely due to pain and then you have stasis to tackle as well :(

Vibes for Harvey x

It's weird, he seems to have stopped the head shaking now (for the last hour ish) and has been eating and pooping ok. He's munching on Hay at the moment. I spoke to the vet and she said he should be ok for tonight as long as it doesn't seem to be really bothering him and he is eating ok. So I have made an appointment for first thing tomorrow. In the mean time I'll keep a close eye on him. Thanks for your help everyone :0)

Good luck at the vets today

Thanks Tulsi :)

The vet has said that he is fine. She checked his ears, temp and heart and gave him a thorough examination and can't find any problems, no signs of infection or mites.

Seems i was just being an hysterical new bunny owner :D

At least he is ok. Maybe he just had an itchy ear!

I'm not exactly a new bunny mummy - but I can very much relate to the hysteria and paranoia:D. So glad that that was all it was....:thumb:
