Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Prince died last night and Preya has an abscess :( update - All gone :)

Prince died suddenly last night after a short illness with E Cuniculi. This evening I noticed that Preya has an abscess between her front legs. She'll be going to the vet tomorrow. I'm so worried. Prince is the 4th rabbit I've lost this year so I'm not having a lot of luck. Please send healing vibes for my beautiful Preya. :(

Oh I'm so sorry you lost prince, and your other buns, tough year. :(
Sending healing vibes for Preya, I hope it turns out to be something easy to put right and she recovers quickly x

Thanks everyone. I'm trying to stay positive - she's only 2 years old and she's a feisty little thing. Also the abscess feels pretty well separated from her body. We're going at 4.50 so fingers crossed. I feel bad for her because she seems to be really well in herself but I know she won't feel so good once the vet's done what he has to do. :(

Sorry you lost Prince

Sending loads of vibes for Preya. Hope it all goes well. Are they sure it is an abscess?

No, that's my guess. We'll find out tonight but it feels like an abscess to me. Michelle had a very similar lump when she was young - luckily that turned out to be an abscess that was very easily treated.

Definitely an abscess. And not connected to anything important. Phew! Depocillin injections for now and she's having it drained on Wednesday.

Just wanted to send healing vibes for Preya on Wednesday. Just wondered if there was a reason for only draining it, as others that have had this done, sometimes seem to have struggled for an awful long time afterwards to get it fully cleared up, and sometimes it has not been successful.

My vet who is a rabbit specialist has always removed my buns abscesses still contained in the capsule as you would say a tumour. It has then been sutured, bun has had antibiotics for a week, and never been a problem again.

Draining abscesses and then having to leave it open to keep flushing out, is actually an excellent way to reintroduce infection, which often seems to be the case, and as you are understandably so anxious about Preya and her making a good recovery, and it sounds a very easy complete removal, I just wondered if this might be the better route for you to follow.
