Got a poorly Daisybun :(

JemimaH

Warren Veteran
She'd been 'off' since Thursday morning, not eating her pellets or hay and was in some obvious discomfort. She got worse and was stomach pressing, teeth grinding etc last night so I called the OOH vets and we had a discussion, but seen as she was eating dandelion leaves and travelling would stress her out even more we left her and saw the specialist this morning.

Turns out she's got a lung infection :( The problem she had originally (upper respiratory, was snuffling and sneezing), has progressed downwards into her lungs and that's why she was feeling so uncomfortable, bless her :( She was also a bit cold and was shivering :( so now we're home with a cocktail of meds, she's on a snugglesafe and is feeling very sorry for herself! I wouldn't normally be so worried but she's nearly 7 years old and isn't as strong as my others, who are only two years old. Poor lass, she looks so uncomfortable :(:(:(

On a happier note, the rabbit specialist at my surgery is amazing! She's lecturing at London Zoo early next week and the surgery is closed on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, but she said that if Daisy got worse and had to be admitted, providing she wasn't mid-lecture she'd get the train back to see her immediately  I'm so lucky, I've got every faith in Sarah and I couldn't have a better vet!

Thank you  I did put her in the kitchen for a while but she started tummy pressing a few minutes after I'd put her down, so I carried her back to the dog crate and she's back on the re-heated snugglesafe now. She's not eaten anything since the vets, so I've got to decide whether I should try syringing some CC into her or whether just to leave her :? Bless her.

Also spoken to P@H about the insurance, the woman was very helpful and said it sounds like it may well be covered, although she cant say for definite. We've only gone £10 over her excess though, so it depends whether she needs further treatment or whether this (hopefully!) will sort her out.

Sounds like you've got a very caring vet. Hope the meds help and she feels better soon. Sending lots of vibes for Daisy xx

Just gave her a syringe feed, she didn't have loads as I didn't want to make her feel really full but she's not spitting it out, she's such a good girlie

How is Daisybun today?

Thank you for asking Di

Daisy is still very poorly :( She's not any worse, from what I can tell, but Daisy is naturally a very secretive and private bunny so she spends most of the day in her carrier anyway. I've been reheating the heatpad for her but she can't be that cold as she isn't using it, unlike yesterday. She's also no brighter, but to be honest I wasn't expecting her to be. I've syringe-fed her a few times today as she's not eating of her own accord, but have just been out to pick some more grass and dandelion leaves for her so hopefully that may tempt her. She doesn't seem to be in pain, so hopefully the meds are doing their work. Thankfully she's been doing plenty of wees (not so many poos, but she's not eating much so that's to be expected), so I'm not worried about her being dehydrated anymore. Our vet is away for a few days now lecturing, so hopefully Dee won't deteriorate further. Hate seeing my girl so poorly :(

One thing I am not sure on is how much to syringe feed her at one time? I don't want to give her loads and her not eat any of her own accord, but i want to keep her gut moving obviously!

Have you tried steaming some of her favourite veg and then mashing it up and let it cool? Daisy might prefer to lap up her food at the moment. I know from past experiences with my bunnies that this has helped them when they weren't very well.

No, I hadn't thought of that. When you say steam it, what do you mean?:lol:

If you haven't got a steamer, you could improvise. If you have a colander which will firmly rest on the rim of a saucepan, pop some water in the saucepan and put the veg into colander and then bring water to boiling point and simmer. Things like carrot, broccoli usually take about 20 minutes, spring greens and spinach only take a few minutes.

I used to steam plenty of veg so there was enough left for later on in the day.

Best of luck.

Thanks Di  x

Have just been down to go and syringe feed her, to find she'd eaten the grass and forage I'd given her :thumb: Will leave her a while now. It's strange as she is eating no hay (or if she is, it's literally only a few strands!) and yet her poos are still coming out relatively golden...darker than normal, but nothing like when she was in full blown stasis last year

She's not doing so good today :( She's pretty much lost all will to eat by herself, I've left her with a spring green leaf and am desperately hoping that will get her munching again. She's also spent pretty much all day on her snugglesafe, despite the heater being on constantly, whereas yesterday she wasn't as cold and looked a bit brighter. Our vet has said get her out a couple of times a day to keep things moving, but she's just got no interest whatsoever and will spend the time tummy pressing in the corner :( I gave her a bigger feed last night and it obviously did some good as there was a pile of black, tiny poos in her littertray, as opposed to the odd few dotted around. At the moment she's getting about 4mls each feed, but I'm doing it in 2 lots (feed her, let her run around then feed her the rest) and she's not spitting too much out which is good. Thankfully she's not putting up too much of a fight with her meds either.

Can't wait for my vet to get back to be honest, ideally I'd take her back tomorrow but as she's the nearest specialist for a while I'd rather try and hang on :(
