Super Fluffy Simba

gillmanning

Alpha Buck
This is Simba after I gave him a brush. He really loved it and almost fell asleep on my lap. He also has some new hair growth coming through so once he's moulted all the scruffy fur out he'll look even more super handsome

How do you think his coat had got like that?

Simba was taken in by ARC as a severe neglect case. He had a lacerated tongue from untreated Dental problems, he was emaciated, starving to death. His coat was clogged with dried saliva from his constant drooling.

Then he collapsed with 'Floppy Rabbit Syndome, almost certainly as a direct result of starvation and neglect. He was paralysed for 3 days, only able to move his jaws to eat syringed feeds.

Here are some previous photos of the state he was in

So dental problems (possibly brought on by lack of hay) prevented him from eating which led to his under-nourished state, bad coat and FRS. So his low condition affected his coat. Does a rabbit's coat always suffer through neglect?

Very often as a severely neglected Rabbit will be both nutrient deficient and also unlikely to self groom. Either due to generalised depression and/or as a result of Dental Disease and/or pain from anywhere which consequently effects the Rabbit's mobility. Secondary mite infestation, bacterial dermatitis and urine scald can also occur. As can a 'mucky bum' from uneaten cecals leading to the risk of Flystrike.
